American Airlines announced plans to expand its air service network in 2026, adding new nonstop routes from Chicago and Los Angeles during both the winter and summer travel seasons.

The expansion includes five new routes, along with upgraded premium services on select long-haul flights. Tickets for the new routes are scheduled to go on sale January 26, 2026.

New routes announced for 2026 include:

New Routes From Chicago

American Airlines will launch new year-round nonstop flights from Chicago O’Hare International Airport to Allentown, Pennsylvania, and Columbia, South Carolina, beginning May 21, 2026. Both routes will be operated twice daily using Embraer 170 aircraft.

The new routes are expected to improve connectivity for travelers at smaller regional airports by providing direct access to American’s hub at Chicago O’Hare.

Chicago to Hawaii

American Airlines will also introduce daily nonstop service between Chicago O’Hare and Kahului, Hawaii, starting December 17, 2026, using Boeing 787-8 aircraft.

Los Angeles to Cleveland

Daily nonstop year-round service between Los Angeles and Cleveland, Ohio, will begin April 7, 2026, operated by Boeing 737 aircraft.

The new service will provide a direct nonstop connection between Los Angeles and Cleveland.

Los Angeles to Washington, D.C.

American Airlines will also add daily nonstop service from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., beginning April 7, 2026.

The new route to Washington Dulles International Airport will complement the airline’s existing service to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, giving travelers up to three daily nonstop options between Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.

American Airlines is also upgrading aircraft on select long-haul domestic routes from Los Angeles. The airline has introduced Airbus A321XLR aircraft featuring Flagship Suite seats on flights to New York’s JFK Airport, with service to Boston expected later in the summer.

Beginning March 28, select flights between Los Angeles and London Heathrow will be operated using Boeing 787-9 aircraft equipped with the airline’s new premium suites.

Previously, the airline had also announced its new free in-flight Wi-Fi services sponsored by AT&T. The free Wi-Fi service is being introduced across many of their flights. It will be available on all Airbus A319, A320, and A321 aircraft, as well as on the entire Boeing 737 fleet.

American Airlines is anticipated to operate around 7,000 flights daily during the summer of 2026, maintaining its position as the world’s largest airline by flight volume. The expanded network is intended to support rising travel demand, including travel related to major global events such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
