H Mart, the largest Asian supermarket chain in the U.S., is planning to open its largest store at Pacific Commons Shopping Center in Fremont, real estate developer Vestar announced in a statement on January 20.

The project represents the company’s largest investment to date, marking a major expansion in California.

Construction is expected to begin in late 2026, Vestar said.

H Mart Fremont to Feature Multi-Level Structure

The new Fremont location will span approximately 100,000 square feet and feature a multi-level structure. It will also introduce H Mart’s first dedicated food hall concept alongside its grocery store.

The food hall will feature a mix of fast-casual eateries, dine-in restaurants, a bar, and entertainment offerings, designed to create an immersive destination combining dining, shopping, and entertainment.

The store will be built on the west side of Pacific Commons, at the intersection of Bunche Drive and Interstate 880, a highly visible location. It will be H Mart’s first store in Fremont.

H Mart currently operates multiple locations across California, including stores in Arcadia, Buena Park, Cerritos, Dublin, Irvine, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, Torrance, and Westminster.

Vestar, which manages Pacific Commons Shopping Center in partnership with owner Heitman, said it is focused on adapting to changing consumer preferences by welcoming experiential, destination-driven concepts that serve the broader community.

Fremont Mayor Welcomes H Mart Expansion Announcement

Pacific Commons Shopping Center is a major retail destination featuring a mix of shopping and dining options, including well-known brands such as Target, Costco, Nordstrom Rack, Sephora, and T.J. Maxx.

Fremont Mayor Raj Salwan welcomed the announcement, noting that the investment is expected to support job creation and strengthen confidence in the local economy.

Pacific Commons Shopping Center is a 1.1 million-square-foot retail center and one of the largest destinations of its kind in Silicon Valley. Its location along the I-880 corridor has made it a regional draw for shoppers.

H Mart’s Steady Growth in US

Founded in 1982, H Mart opened its first store in New York and expanded to eight locations by 1990.

Today, the chain operates more than 100 stores across 18 states and is widely known as a leading destination for Asian food in the U.S.

The chain combines an extensive selection of Asian ingredients with a wide range of everyday household staples, allowing it to function as a full-service supermarket for a broad, multicultural customer base.
