A minor earthquake rattled the region close to Ferndale in Northern California’s Humboldt County on May 28, 2026.

A magnitude 3.0 earthquake was documented about 105 kilometers west of Ferndale at 12:51 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The epicenter was located at a depth of 3.8 kilometers.

The epicenter is close to other cities, including Petrolia (around 109 kilometers), Humboldt Hill (111.6 kilometers), and Bayview (112.7 kilometers).

The tremor did not seem to cause any noticeable shaking.

No responses were submitted on the USGS’s ‘Did You Feel It?’ earthquake reporting tool.

The USGS is yet to categorize the intensity of the seismic event.

An earthquake’s intensity measures the shaking at each location, varying from place to place, whereas the magnitude denotes the size of a quake.

No injuries or damage were reported due to the quake.

Usually, earthquakes that occur at shallow depths cause more intense shaking than those that occur deeper. The intensity of shaking from a quake typically weakens as distance increases from the earthquake’s source.

For instance, the strength of shaking at the surface from a tremor that occurs at a depth of 500 kilometers will produce less intensity than if it occurred at a depth of 20 kilometers.

Another Tremor Felt in Northern California

Another tremor shook Northern California earlier on Thursday.

A 2.8-magnitude earthquake struck 15 kilometers east-northeast of Red Bluff in Tehama County at around 7:51 a.m., according to the USGS.

The epicenter was located at a depth of 9.7 kilometers.

Similar to the tremor near Ferndale, the earthquake near Red Bluff was too minor to result in any significant shaking.

There were no responses submitted using the USGS’s ‘Did You Feel It?’ reporting tool.

The USGS is yet to categorize the intensity of the quake.

No injuries or damage were reported due to the quake.

A 3.5-magnitude earthquake was documented 26 kilometers northeast of Viola in Shasta County, according to the USGS.

The tremor was categorized as Level III intensity, which indicates weak shaking and no damage.

On the same day, a 3.2-magnitude earthquake was reported near Malibu Beach in Southern California’s Los Angeles County, according to the USGS. The epicenter was located 8 kilometers south of Malibu Beach, at a depth of nearly 12.4 kilometers.

The tremor resulted in significant shaking, with 128 people experiencing the seismic event, according to the USGS’s ‘Did You Feel It?’ tool.
