As part of the statewide Wildfire Preparedness Week effort, CAL FIRE held a Northern California news conference at the CAL FIRE Sonoma Air Attack Base, offering an up-close look at the aircraft, crews, and resources preparing for the 2026 fire year. As California recognizes Wildfire Preparedness Week, May 3–9, 2026, CAL FIRE and its’ partner agencies are hosting events statewide to highlight wildfire readiness, interagency coordination, and the steps Californians can take to protect their homes and communities.
The event brought together leadership from CAL FIRE and local, state, tribal, and federal fire and emergency officials. Together, agency representatives discussed wildfire preparedness, operational partnerships, and the region’s coordinated approach to wildfire response and community resiliency.
Today’s event featured static displays of CAL FIRE’s operational aircraft fleet, including air tankers, helicopters, and tactical aircraft—all staged and mission-ready now and for the warmer months ahead.
“Northern California continues to face dynamic wildfire conditions, and our strength lies in preparation, partnership, and the dedication of the personnel who serve our communities,” said CAL FIRE Director and Fire Chief Joe Tyler. “This event highlighted the investments and readiness that help protect lives, property, and natural resources.”
Wildfire Preparedness Week reinforces the shared responsibility of all Californians to prepare for wildfire by creating defensible space, hardening homes, developing evacuation plans, and staying informed through local alerts.
