Bass Pro Shops, the retailer known for its fishing, hunting, camping, and outdoor gear, is bringing a new outdoor retail destination to La Mesa to serve the greater San Diego region.
The new store will be located at Grossmont Center, occupying 148,000 square feet, the retailer announced on July 1.
Scheduled to open in 2028, the La Mesa store will be Bass Pro Shops’ sixth California outlet and its first in San Diego County.
The new location marks an expansion of Bass Pro Shops’ presence in Southern California. The store is expected to create more than 150 jobs, according to the company.
The La Mesa location will be designed to reflect the region’s outdoor traditions and natural surroundings.
Like its other stores, the store will sport a unique themed interior that will celebrate local landscapes, wildlife, and outdoor recreation, while offering products for activities such as fishing, hunting, camping, and boating.
The store will serve anglers and outdoor enthusiasts in the region, said Johnny Morris, angler, conservationist, and Bass Pro Shops founder.

“With access to both saltwater and freshwater fishing, this area offers something truly special, and we look forward to helping families and friends enjoy it together,” he said.
According to the company, the store will serve as more than a retail destination by incorporating educational displays and experiences focused on the outdoors and conservation.
Bass Pro Shops said it has a long-standing focus on conservation and outdoor stewardship through partnerships and initiatives aimed at protecting wildlife and natural habitats.
The company said it has donated more than 10% of its earnings to support conservation efforts in local communities in North America.
It operates retail stores across North America and also owns Cabela’s, White River Marine Group, Big Cedar Lodge, and other outdoor recreation and hospitality brands.
Bass Pro Shops opened its first store in California in 2007 and currently has 182 locations across North America, per the official release. It will be the latest retailer to set up shop at the Grossmont Center, after the departure of some long-term stores.
Earlier this year, Macy’s announced it was closing its location at the shopping center in La Mesa, the Times of San Diego reported. The department store had anchored Grossmont Center since the shopping center opened in 1961.
In June, Reading Cinemas closed its location at Grossmont Center, according to a FOX5 News report. The La Mesa location, which opened in 2008, was Reading Cinemas’ last theater in San Diego.
The report added that Grossmont Center has been undergoing a major renovation, including enhanced storefronts, entrances, and landscaping.
