Tales & Scales at the Sea Center on Stearns Wharf
Tales and Scales is the Halloween Sea Center event for all age groups! Visitors are encouraged to come in costume and there will be several activities, including two live video calls from the Exploration Vessel Nautilus, a Live Dive at Stearns Wharf, a scavenger hunt, and fish design activities. This event is free with paid admission to the Sea Center.
Cocktails with a Curator: Swimming with the Sirenians
Join us as we take a close look at the discovery, excavation, and preservation of the first sea cow fossil discovered on the California Channel Islands.

Butterflies Alive! and Backyard Reopening
The Museum’s popular seasonal exhibit Butterflies Alive! returns Saturday, September 22 through Sunday, October 14 in the new Sprague Butterfly Pavilion. The exhibit is open daily from noon to 4:00 PM when the butterflies are most active. Stroll through the Butterfly Pavilion and enjoy our fluttery friends as they float from flower to flower. Then, explore the transformed Museum Backyard and Nature Club House. The Backyard is bigger, better, wetter, more fun and more accessible than ever. Free with paid Museum admission.

Science Pub: Parasitic Worms in a Dark Wet Forest
Kelp forests are home to hundreds of animal species, and nearly all of these host parasites. All of these species are intertwined in a complex web, which can only be fully appreciated once you recognize parasites. Meet Dr. Dana Morton from the Ecological Parasitology Lab at University of California Santa Barbara as she shares what she has learned about kelp forests by studying the parasites.

Do you have a passion for learning, science, and nature? Would you like to share your enthusiasm with child and adult visitors at the Museum? Are you looking for lifelong learning opportunities and a way to make new friends? Join us at our Docent Open House!
Museum docents are a vital part of our community, as they help lead school programs and adult tours during the academic year and beyond. Becoming a docent requires no prior experience, and we offer in-depth training and all of the support and flexibility docents need to succeed.
Science on Site: The Art of Bug Pinning
Meet the Museum’s Curator of Entomology, Dr. Matthew Gimmel, and entomologist Sandy Russell, as they demonstrate how dead insects are pinned and prepared for collections.
Select visitors (age 10+) can also participate by signing up to pin dead beetle or butterfly specimens of their own. Participants get to take home their pinned specimens!
All are welcome to observe. Space for pinning activity is limited, sign-up occurs on the day of the program outside of Broder Hall and is available on a first-come, first served basis.

Using the power of focused electron beams, Dr. Daniel Geiger is able to showcase magnified images of insects, shells and more with his magnificent Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)! Join Dr. Geiger for a demonstration of the SEM and learn how it works. Space is limited, sign-up in the Courtyard on Tuesday, July 24 at 10:30AM. Must be 10 years or older.

Science Pub: Discovering the Children & Nature Network
Richard Louv, author of “Last Child in the Woods” coined the term “nature deficit disorder” to describe how human beings, especially children, are spending less time outdoors. Fortunately, individuals and organizations across the globe are working to remedy this issue through the international Children and Nature Network, a movement focused on connecting all children, their families and communities to nature through innovative ideas and broad-based collaborations.
World Oceans Day Festival
The Sea Center, in collaboration with UC Santa Barbara, will celebrate World Oceans Day by offering FREE admission.
The World Oceans Day theme for 2018 focuses on preventing plastic pollution and encouraging solutions for a healthy ocean.
Field Trip: Fossil Hunting at Jalama Beach
Join Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History’s Dibblee Collection Manager of Earth Science, Dr. Jonathan Hoffman, on a search for the fossils of gastropods, bivalves, fish, birds, and marine mammals from the late Miocene to early Pliocene epochs (~4 to 6 million years old) at Jalama Beach.
Pre-registration required.
Members $48; non-members $53
Price includes one State Beach Day Pass per vehicle. Participants meet at Jalama Beach, Lompoc.

Science on Site: Mars InSight Mission Roadshow
NASA's InSight mission will be the first interplanetary launch from the West Coast, set for May 5 from Vandenberg Air Force Base.
In preparation for its May launch, the Mars InSight Roadshow is bringing family-friendly science activities to communities throughout California, making comparisons between earthquakes and the marsquakes that InSight will try to detect.
Stop by the Museum's Space Lab for the following activities:
