Learn about the cultural importance of the Mexican festival Día de los Muertos. Enjoy activities over three days including a Monarch Migration Quest, face painting, crafts, altars, and more.

Supak’a: Sharing Chumash Culture
Come join a celebration of Chumash culture and participate in an event that shares the diversity of the Chumash tribes, the rich ongoing traditions of the indigenous peoples of this region, and the cultural preservation efforts of the Chumash communities for future generations.
Cultural activities include singing, dancing, storytelling, basket weaving demonstrations, crafts, games, and much more!
Field Trip: Art Inspired by Wine
Join the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History for a very special art field trip to be inspired by vines and wine at Roblar Winery. Drink up the beauty while learning about viticulture and the winemaking process as you wine taste in the vineyard with wine expert Chris Coleman. Then create a leaf-printed reusable wine bag to take home with guidance from local artist Christine Brand from Nature + Pigment.
Must be 21+ with valid ID. Tickets: $55 Museum Members, $65 non-members. Price includes all materials needed and wine tasting. Register at sbnature.org/tickets.

Enjoy the Sea Center’s unique hands-on exhibits after the kids have all gone home!
Bring your friends or a date to get your hands wet touching friendly Swell Sharks, anemones, and sea stars. Go upstairs to be mesmerized by our Moon Jellies, Two-Spot Octopus, and Mantis Shrimp.
Enjoy breathtaking evening views of Santa Barbara’s coastline over a glass of Deep Sea wine and light nibbles catered by chef Pete Clements (included with admission).
Must be 21+ with valid ID.

Science on Site: Mayan Glyphs
Meet Dr. Andrea Medina as she demonstrates how Mayan language is written with glyphs. The Maya developed a syllabic and a logograph writing system. Learn about this language as you carve your own glyph tile to take home. Included in Museum admission. Animal eyes are some of the most intricate structures produced by evolution. Surprisingly, simple creatures like jellies have eyes that can be as complex as those of humans. Join Natasha Picciani from UCSB as she shares new discoveries on how jellies’ eyes have evolved over time.

Darwin Trivia Takeover at Night Lizard
Join us at Night Lizard when the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History takes over Trivia Night! Test your Darwin knowledge as we celebrate his 210th birthday with all Darwin-related questions. Winners are eligible for cash, beer, and special prizes.

Underwater Parks Day Festival
JANUARY 19, 2019 / 10:00 AM–3:00 PM
Dive into the world of marine science with interactive activities and crafts during this free event at the Sea Center on Stearns Wharf. Learn about octopus camouflage and go on an octopus hunt around the Sea Center habitats. Be inspired by local poets and write your own ocean-themed poetry. Connect with marine conservation specialists to learn more about the Santa Barbara Channel.
Science Pub: Sundowner Winds in Santa Barbara
Sundowner winds intensified all of the major wildfires that affected the Santa Barbara region in recent years. Join Dr. Leila M. V. Carvalho, Professor of Geography at University of California Santa Barbara, as she explains why sundowners occur, how unique they are, and the importance of observations and forecasts to increase resilience to wildfires in our region.
Orchid Care Workshop
Orchid expert Barbara Schmidt explains smart orchid care in the Museum’s beautifully decorated Holiday Pavilion. Bring your own orchids for their new year check-up and get advice about potential problems and pitfalls. Join us for the whole workshop, or stop by for one of the scheduled demonstrations to brush up on a single skill. Free with paid admission to the Museum.

Santa in the Holiday Pavilion
Santa has traveled all the way from the North Pole to visit our new Holiday Pavilion and he wants to meet you! Come tell him your Christmas wishes and take a photo to share the memory. Santa will be with us from 11:00 AM-2:30 PM on Saturday, December 15.

Mosquitoes kill more humans every year than any other any other animal, including people. Distinguished Professor Dr. Craig Montell of the Department of Molecular, Cellular, & Developmental Biology at University of California, Santa Barbara will demonstrate how working on the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster provided insights into new strategies for mosquito control that would not otherwise be possible.
