Mental Health in Our Community: A Vital Dialogue (with a Depth Psychology Perspective)
Mental health is an extremely important part of every person’s individual well-being. It can impact our relationships, our work, our learning, and our overall quality of life, and in turn, how we interact with those around us.
Unfortunately, mental health problems are often stigmatized and not talked about openly and honestly, which can make it difficult for people to not only recognize their own issues, and those around them, but to know how to get the help they need.

Jonathan Greenblatt: Fighting Hate for Good
As the chief executive of the Anti-Defamation League, the world’s leading anti-hate organization, Jonathan Greenblatt has created innovative approaches to carry out what has been ADL’s mission since its founding in 1913: to fight the defamation of the Jewish people, and to secure justice and fair treatment to all. His recent book, It Could Happen Here, warns that hate and systemic violence are gathering momentum in the U.S.
UCSB Arts & Lectures Presents Víkingur Ólafsson, piano
Icelandic virtuoso Víkingur Ólafsson combines out-of-this-world musicianship with an unusual gift for programming. His concerts are carefully calibrated compositions; each segment comments on those that come before and after. At Hahn Hall, Ólafsson will perform a Mozart & Contemporaries program that sheds light on lesser-known figures such as Domenico Cimarosa and Baldassare Galuppi and illuminates obscure, daring works by Mozart and Haydn. This intimate recital offers a rare opportunity to explore unheard depths and connections among music’s greatest composers.
Charles Montgomery: A UCSB Reads Author Event
The city you live in has a powerful effect on how you behave. How, then, do we design happy cities? Urban design consultant, award-winning journalist and author of Happy City, Charles Montgomery looks for answers in psychology, neuroscience, behavioral economics and cityscapes from Disneyland to Dubai. Montgomery launched the world’s first Happy Neighborhood Audit in Mexico City, works with the World Health Organization’s Europe Healthy Cities Network, and collaborates with TIME magazine on an interactive survey exploring happiness in American cities.
Woman. Life. Freedom. Public Art Projection
Woman. Life. Freedom. is a public art projection featuring 30 artworks by anonymous international artists. These monumental digital images, which will be projected onto the façade of the UCSB Art, Design & Architecture Museum, respond to systemic gender inequity and discrimination in Iran. As a gesture of solidarity, the works in this exhibition reflect the central message that a struggle for women’s right to self-determination affirms human dignity.
Note: Projection will run from 8 PM-11 PM.
St. Francis Foundation of Santa Barbara Names New Executive Director and Board Chair
Mark Morris Dance Group
Mark Morris Dance Group’s evening-length work, The Look of Love, is the newest collaboration from choreographer Mark Morris and arranger Ethan Iverson. An homage to the chart-topping songs of Burt Bacharach – including popular compositions for Dionne Warwick such as “Walk on By” and “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again” – the piece features original choreography, a live musical ensemble and lush new arrangements of more than a dozen legendary hits by the multi-award-winning composer.
Laura Dern & Diane Ladd Presented by UCSB Arts & Lectures
During the global pandemic, acclaimed actor Laura Dern (Big Little Lies, Twin Peaks, Jurassic Park) and legendary talent Diane Ladd (Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Chinatown) began taking long walks together. The mother and daughter had appeared alongside one another in Rambling Rose and David Lynch’s Wild at Heart, and their relationship deepened as they were able to break down the traditional barriers between parent and child, speaking honestly about moments that profoundly impacted them.
CCC Light Shines Ahead Luncheon
Compassionate Care of Carpinteria (CCC) hosts its 5th annual luncheon, The Light Shines Ahead, on Wednesday, May 31st, in person, from 11:30am – 1:30pm at the beautiful Rincon Beach Club in Carpinteria. The event features steering committee chair Marybeth Carty and special guest speakers including Beth Cox and Virginia Benson Wigle.
