Santa Barbara Audubon Society (SBAS) Presents The Russian Far East: Birding in a Sea of Sorrow

The nearly landlocked Sea of Okhotsk (pronounced aa·kowts·uhk) in the Russian Far East, is little known outside of Russia and seldom visited by westerners. Remaining frozen much of the year, the winter storms make it an inhospitable place, but the “Sea of Hunters” as it is translated, provides a clue to the abundance of wildlife found there. Despite historical exploitation of the wildlife, marine mammals and seabirds still thrive there in huge numbers. One small island is packed with an estimated seven million birds.

    Estuaries: California's Marine Nurseries

Something special happens when a river meets an ocean. Freshwater rivers and streams flow from inland to mix with salty ocean water, creating a unique habitat called an estuary. Estuaries, and the wetlands and bays that surround them, are some of the most productive areas in the world for birds, other wildlife, and humans. Presenter Andrea Jones will focus on California’s coasts and estuaries, which are part of the Pacific Flyway–the migratory bird highway stretching from the Arctic to Patagonia, supporting nearly a billion birds.

    These Complicated Women

"These Complicated Women" considers the deeply conflicted, passionate, and fascinating lives of some famous and talented women from the last century: “Hallie” about Hallie Flanagan, a true story of the ambitious Federal Theater Director during the WPA who was beset by personal tragedy yet became the first female Guggenheim scholar. “Modotti,” is inspired by true events.
