Known as one of the finest pianists of the past 60 years, EDDIE PALMIERI is a bandleader, arranger and composer of salsa and Latin jazz. His playing skillfully fuses the rhythm of his Puerto Rican heritage with the complexity of his jazz influences: Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner as well as his older brother, Charlie Palmieri.

The Uptown Jazz Orchestra was formed in 2008 to bring the traditional riff and blues sounds to school students in the New Orleans area. Under the direction of trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis, and anchored by Dirty Dozen Brass Band founder Roger Lewis on bari sax, UJO sings and swings with confidence and soul…all night long! Performing blues and standards that combine riff-playing, spontaneous arrangements and the New Orleans secondline groove, the Uptown Jazz Orchestra keeps the old school jazz traditions alive.

A dozen teenagers will take to the stage to perform solo renditions of rock-and-roll covers, backed by Santa Barbara rock star Michael Andrews as a core musical mentor as well as music educator Sio Tepper and vocal coach/AHA! facilitator Mariangelica Duque. Celebrate 20 years of AHA!, a local nonprofit that fosters social and emotional intelligence in adolescents.
This year’s event falls on Mother’s Day and will include pampering perks for the mothers/nurturers in attendance.

University of California, Santa Barbara Library and Opera Theatre present the North American premiere of Franz Lehár’s The Mock Marriage (Die Juxheirat), selected from the collection of the Michael and Nan Miller Operetta Archive. The 1904 women’s suffrage operetta is set in Newport, Rhode Island and features beautiful melodies, sweeping orchestrations, grand costumes and comedic turns that will delight audiences young and old. Both performances by the award-winning UCSB Opera Theatre students will be performed in English.
