I have a kitchen full of knives that are so dull they would not cut much of
anything.
The Holidays are around the corner, and I am in need of someone who will come to my
house and sharpen my knives.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Randy Bartholome does just that. Try a google search. We've worked with him and he's good.

May I suggest you do it yourself? That way, your knives will always be sharp and you will understand what a good edge is. Besides, sharpening knives is relaxing therapy. Buy the book and the stones. Be the envy of your friends with really sharp knives. Warning, people not expecting a sharp knife, may cut themselves. http://www.razoredgesystems.com/index.php? page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage-ask.tpl&product_id=2&category_id=7&vmcchk=1&option= com_virtuemart&Itemid=9 http://tinyurl.com/97xybct

Randy Bartholomay of RB Sharpening Service. He has a nifty set up in his truck for sharpening any type of cutting device. I had him come by to sharpen some sheep shears for our local 4H project then I pulled out every type of knife and razor on the property for him to sharpen. 680-9288 And I love getting experienced referrals from my BCFs (Best Community Friends) on Edhat!

802----yes. To the OP: Julian has it right. It is laughably easy to sharpen your own knives/garden tools. I bought a small little pocket-sized sharpener (w/ sub-micron carbide blade) for $18.50. (Lee Valley tools, online.) My kitchen knives are always sharp now. I can cut through pumpkins and butternut squash with ease. My garden clippers work smooth as silk. Do it yourself. If Julian and I can do it, you can. (Unless you just feel the need to burn through some money.)

OP simply asked for a referral... happily, it looks as though he/she has gotten a great one. WHY do EdHatters want to make someone "wrong" for this? You don't know the OP and what limitations he/she may have... it's a very reasonable question. Glad you got your answer, OP... RB seems to be the consensus (and the ONLY answer, actually). It used to be, 40 years ago, that there were "knife guys" offering this service around, who also sold nice knives as well. It's good to know there's still a survivor out there. Good luck to you.

I'm glad to hear there are so many do it yourself guys out there but just a stone and a steel are not going to keep your knifes in the best condition. A professional every year or two depending on your use is really recommended for a good expensive knife. Why do you think all professional cooks have their knifes sharpened professionally and then use a good steel in between?

The OP asked a legimate question, and thankfully got some polite, helpful answers. To people who sharpen their own, good for you; don't chastise someone who wants to take a different route.

Bobby in lower Riviera has professional knife sharpening business --- drop the knives at his home, he will sharpen to perfection, leave them at his front door with the bill (very reasonable), and you put payment in basket when you pick up. 884-0666

I also liked Jim @Quality Cutlery - he did a GREAT job - and phooey on those who say do it yourself! After Jim sharpens your knives everything will feel like butter when you cut it! Best thing I ever did. Made my knives like new again after 10 years of DIY sharpening.

From the way the headline was written, it could be imagined that you'd want to get your knives sharpened for those undesirable relatives visiting during the Holidays, haha!

I used the referrals and feel so guilty not posting feedback sooner! It’s been 5 months since I had 12 knives sharpened by James Lee Quality Cutlery, a mobile service sharpening and selling knives. He did an OUTSTANDING job getting all my edges mirror smooth and razor sharp. If you haven’t had your knives sharpened by this skilled and professional craftsman you are in for a revelation. Your knife edges will be so smooth and sharp and all your cutting so effortless, you will wonder how you ever managed with out his work. I am in total awe of every single knife he worked on. Don’t hesitate to let him work on any dull nasty knife you own. It will be completely transformed and become a joy to use after he gets done. I included every Kmart steak knife I own and wow, ugly ducklings that are now, gorgeous swans! Too much? Not even. I highly recommend his services. James Lee Quality Cutlery (805) 968-7852
