Parking Cone-undrum
updated: Sep 15, 2012, 12:41 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

These 2 cones/pylons have been sitting in the street almost all day. They belong to the city, but I think the owner of the shiny red car put them there.
I'm wondering if this is legal and what recourse do residents have? There are no other signs posted about "no parking" there. I'm also trying to see who retrieves these cones.

UPDATE: A subscriber has submitted a photo showing that the City Park Cleanup put the cones there.

No.

Op here: I have a security camera facing that direction, but the night vision is not too good. They are still there, but if I can't find parking on the street tomorrow, I will move them.

@188 ~ what exactly are you saying "no" to ????

194P - The blurb asked if it was legal to use stolen parking cones. The answer is "no."

There's a similar tactic that's been taken up on Grand Ave, behind Roosevelt. Someone there got a can of spray paint and painted "No Parking" (on the asphalt), and outlined a space the size of a large vehicle. Patently obvious sense of entitlement at work, in that case.

Over a year ago, I called the city's Graffiti Hotline and reported this defacement of public property. Nothing was done about it.

Go out and take the cones, put them across the street, onto the "parkway," and call Public Works. Tell them someone left the cones behind, and to please come get them. (They're heavy little buggers, and cost a few pennies, too.)

I would tape a note to the cones that says "we are watching you".

What is the saying about assuming things??? I too would be livid but I wouldn't assume neither that the cones were stolen nor that the cones were "stolen" by the owner of the red car. I would gingerly stack the cones on the parkway and proudly park my four-door Buick, dents and all, at the curb.

Bogarting......have heard that in a while. I love it. Who says they are the City's cones anyway. Spray paint them black and or just thow them into the recycling bin.

op here: @244 I didn't use the word "bogart". Apparently the EdHat staff took liberty in changing the words. The cones are stenciled "Property of Santa Barbara City". I aimed my security camera in that direction, but visibility at night is not so good. Unless, they come tomorrow, during the day, I'm out of luck as to see who removes the one remaining cone.

op here: I do not know who put the cones there, so I'm not going to accuse any car owners of anything. I've never seen that red car on our street before, so I don't even know who it belongs to. If my security camera catches anything, I will update.

I work for the city and it is actually legal to steal cones believe it or not, but only for the purpose of reserving public parking spaces.

What means "bogarting"?

Bogarting is a word used that means , you are taking something excessivily.. like "hogging" something means you are taking more than you should. So, using the word "bogart" in the parking situation, means someone is taking up / reserving excessive parking area, that they probably shouldn't take.... I believe the original use was in reference to smoking a joint (marijuana cigarrett), and not passing it to the next person in a timely manner.

Yes, I said "I think the owner of the shiny red car put it there".... but, I didn't say "I KNOW the owner.....".. big difference. But, the cone is still there this morning, right in front of the shiney red car. Thanks for letting me know that it's OK to steal City cones, cuz I might have a massive collection stored somewhere for future use.!!!!! lol

@278 - If you have a good cone, then you might get some good cone. what's MEPS?

Thank you TRUTHTELLER for saying that... my thoughts exaclty.

D8.... wouldn't it be more pro-active to remove the cones and make that parking spot available to any and all? By your own admission you don't know who placed them there or why and yet you report on your conjecture and assumptions (what you think happened: thoughts are not facts).

And if you place security cameras to guard the front of your property why use ones that have no night time resolution? Isn't that when most security breaches can be expected?

This reminds me of a fairly recent accusatory post of someone driving drunk because they had a tire blow out less than a mile from home and chose to drive on the flat/rim instead of repairing it on the spot. Lots of conjecture and photos of marks in the asphalt but no facts to support the assumptions/accusations made.

OP here: Just found out that a City worker from the Parks Dept put the cones there to try and save at least one spot for his trucks. He said he didn't want to do the 3-day notices because he thought there might be complaints. A huge volunteer group came and cleaned up the park on San Andres st & Victoria. Great job!! Looks terrific.

SCEPTIC - exactly where does it state "observed"? Or is that just a flying leap of a guess? Huge volunteer groups, I am making a flying leap of a guess here, probably know diddly squat about where, what and why regarding the clean up and need direction. Or would you like to pay cleaners and their supervisor instead?

op here- My security cameras are not mounted on the exterior yet. And, the glare from the window at night, interferes with the night vision. If they are mounted outside, or if I have the window open and screen off, then it's great. The city worker was working and is the regular guy. He does a great job, one of the best gardeners I've seen there. He actually works!!!

my complaint is about folks who use folding chairs to block parking spaces on Alamar at Oak Park. This happens every weekend and is very inconvenient for the neighborhood.
