In what restaurant in town can one enjoy really good apple pie? Or a selection of quality fruit pies? Remember Ruth and
Roger's restaurant on West Montecito Street?

If any of you grew up in the 40's or 50's with "stay-at-home" mothers like I did who made apple pies from scratch with TLC - well, that special taste is only a fond memory now.

Simply Pies IMO not worth the money. They're ok and pretty expensive. We use fresh fruit, or occasionally frozen fruit, and flavor is d e l i c i o u s. While we appreciate Costco in general, the pies earn about a "C" in my mind. Few restaurants have a selection of pies that are made on site. Perhaps pies will have a revival from all the current varieties of desserts.

This is so funny. My 11-year-old pal loves to look at Bed, Bath & Beyond catalogues. New one arrived today. He tells me what he thinks is cool, hoping I will buy something. An hour ago he was reading off the sale items to me. He was quite taken with the apple peeler (mechanical model) shown on sale for $20. I told him I have one already, a lovely old thing, from the '50s. Then we discussed who needs an apple peeler nowadays, He said, "It would be good to use if you made applesauce or apple pies." To which I replied, "Who do you know who makes applesauce or apple pies, besides me?" Of course, I never peel my (organic) apples anyway. Don't know why I still have my apple peeler! And, sorry. I don't know who makes the best apple pie in town. Try Simply Pies. They must be doing something right, they've been in business for years.

2.5 c flour, 2 sticks butter, 1T sugar, 1t. Salt pulse in food processor... Makes 2 crusts (top and bottom) refrigerate while you prepare the filling. Sliced apples with some cinnamon, sugar, lemon juice, 1/4 c flour and a few pats of butter is what I use. 350 for about 45-50 minutes

Thanks for remembering so fondly my mom and dad's restaurant, Ruth and Roger's, and how good our apple pie was. We made 18 different kinds a pie a day and our customers would call ahead of time to save their favorites. We came to SB from Ohio in 1953 and purchased our corner at Bath and Montecito Streets. We lived upstairs and my parents for years worked 18 hours a day, 7 days a week, until I got married in 1957, when they took their 1st vacation and closed for the weekend. They sold and retired around 1975 to their lovely home in San Roque and enjoyed their retirement. We always said that we had the "cream of the crop" customers. Thank you again for remembering, Ruth and Roger's.

I remember in the early sixties when I went to SBCC, I would walk down the hill to catch the bus to go home. If it was cold and rainy I would sometimes stop in to Ruth and Roger's and treat myself to a yummy piece of pie.

Apples are ready in See Canyon--time to make a pie! Hey, Ed, how about an apple pie contest--looks like we've got some pretty confident pie makers here. OK: what's your favorite apple/apple mix for a two-crust pie?

I didn't think anyone remembered Ruth & Roger's! I was quite little but I remember getting dressed up (Bostonian family...one must dress for dinner, gloves included...hey it was the late 60's/early 70's) and having the lamb chops. I passed on the mint jelly but my Nanna loved it. Hate what has happened to that building - the charm is gone. Then again, so has the neighborhood.

It was an article on Santa Barbara in the Chicago Tribune sometime in the early 1960's that mentioned the soothing fragrance of pittosporum and also Ruth and Rogers Restaurant, among other attributes of Santa Barbara. A few years later when moving here, our family enjoyed the unpretentious good food which was simply a preparation for enjoying the home made pies. Thank you 279 for sharing a little about your family's history and about the good pies - 18 different varieties a day - Wow. Wish there were more good, comforting, unfancy restaurants these days.

All the desserts at Fresco in 5 Points are good. Sojourner's desserts are also very good. I would think that if you want a whole pie you would need to call and order it beforehand.

Oh, yes, Ruth and Rogers, they still have place in my heart. After my mother was killed by a hit and run driver on Chapala Street in the 60s, Ruth and Roger and their staff literally adopted my father, brother, and me. We loved going there for dinner - everything was delicious and the pies out of this world. My dad would buy one of Ruth's pies instead of a cake for special occasions. The loveliest people - so glad they enjoyed their retirement.

Oh yes! Ruth and Rogers! My mother from Texas was addicted to the restaurant and the pies. We would go there after shopping downtown. I'd have the cold roast beef sandwich on the softest, freshest bread ever. We would always have pie: Mom would have apple, and I would have berry. Of course, we would always take a pie or two home to the boys. What a wonderful memory!

You didn't ask, but....the key to a good apple pie is to use at least three different kinds of apples (sweet and tart - like mostly Granny Smith plus a couple of other sweeter kinds) and don't overload w sugar. That way you can really taste the apples, a fresher taste than what is sold in stores. Shoot, it's too hot to bake right now......

I won't touch apple pie from Costco, and the recipe given is a little lacking in directions "with some sugar," etc. but it depends on the apples.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Interesting to see pies rate twice as many responses than an investigation of Cottage Hospital. By the way, is the food still pretty decent tasting and priced at Cottage Cafeteria? Got good pies there?

618, I say yes to Cottage cafeteria. I most enjoy the little cafe next to the parking structure, Park Place Cafe. 3 salad plate, (including protein [chicken, tuna] salad before they run out) and good bread for 5-$6; hot dinners, and always posole and chili. Great stop for neighborhood dwellers when you can't or don't want to cook. Good coffee too. http://www.sbch.org/tabid/1272/Default.aspx Also the Cafe next to (old?) main entrance on Bath. http://www.santabarbara.com/dining/review_read.asp?pk_restaurant=1320 AND -- Wed. Farmer's Market in the caf.

I shared the apple pie at Cafe Stella with my grandfather and we both hated it! I had such high hopes for it since the menu made it sound so yummy and it was super tart and lemony, no apple taste to it at all. The caramel on top was just alright. Sadly it seems most of their desserts are subpar compared to their entrees.

Simply Pies is expensive, but definitely worth it for an occasional treat... And you are supporting a local business that sources as many of its ingredients locally as possible. Marcies pies... Also great...available at farmers markets in SB and Goleta. If you make the trip north, it is Apple season up around SLO. Avila Valley Barn for great pies, and pick your own apples.
