Romero Canyon Fatality

MONTECITO, CA – 12:53 p.m. The Montecito Fire Protection District responded to a patient with chest pains on the Romero
Canyon Trail, approximately two miles from the top of the trail off E. Camino Cielo. Dispatchers were able to obtain GPS coordinates from the patient’s cell
phone, but due to the remote location of the patient, a helicopter was sent from Santa Barbara County to assist ground crews that hiked down from
E. Camino Cielo and up from Bella Vista Dr.
Paramedics reached the patient via helicopter at 2:14 pm, and found the patient to be deceased, with her three dogs by her side.
The deceased patient was airlifted from the scene, and rescue crews hiked the dogs out to safety, and turned over to Animal Control.
Montecito Fire responded to the incident with Santa Barbara County Search and Rescue, Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department, USFS Los Padres,
AMR and Animal Control.
