Buy a Lonely Planet guide and avoid fellow Americans. Ask the locals for suggestions and look for Canadians - they are the BEST travelers.

Went to sothern Spain a few years ago. We stayed closer to Marbella, but took a day trip to Malaga (we weren't that impressed - not too much to do, but the food/architecture/markets were nice). Take the train/metro toward Marbella (1-2 hours) well worth the trip. The public transport it pretty easy and you can take the city buses wherever you need to go. If you have a little more time head to Gibralter (another 1-2 hours) or take the fary to Tangier it is a must. There are also many other day trips from Malaga that would be well worth it. My advise - get out of Malaga and check out as much as you can in the surrounding cities. Have fun! If you like Cava, Brits, and Tapa's you will have a great time!

Grotesque, overbuilt holiday condo high-rises full of beet-red sunburnt foreigners, so you will be glad when you come back to Santa Barbara so far we have been able to prevent this seaside destruction. Get out of town as soon as you can once you arrive -- and try to take a ferry to Morocco for a day trip too. Why on earth did you choose to spend money going to this totally artificial place? Oxnard Keys would have been better. Or Miami Beach on a package tour.

My wife and I just spent a day in Malaga in April. We thought it was really beautiful. The old downtown section is really pretty and worth a few hours walking around to discover all the interesting shops and tapas bars. We also went to Castillo de Gibralfaro which was really interesting. Overall, we were really impressed with Malaga and we really want to go back.

Skip Malaga. Yuck. Head to Sevilla, cordoba, la Ruta Blanca, Jerez, or just about an other city in southern Spain.

Why Malaga? The circle trip of Cordoba, Granada and Sevilla with stops in Ronda and Jerez would be time better spent-with a visit to Gibraltar from Algeciras. If you want beach time, Marbella is a far lovelier area with some great, albeit expensive hotels.
