Specialized Oral Surgeon
updated: Sep 13, 2012, 5:14 PM

Do any Edhat readers have experience with ameloblastoma surgery? My friend was recently diagnosed with a large one in his lower jaw, behind the wisdom tooth. It was discovered when the tooth was removed last month. It's not cancerous, yet, but could go that way so he needs more surgery. He is looking for a second opinion and an oral surgeon with experience in treating these. He is in Santa Maria, but is willing to travel to Santa Barbara or San Luis Obispo. We really appreciate hearing about any experiences and doctors who have treated these successfully. Thanks!

Wow, bummer. Best wishes to your friend! I guess it could be much worse, as always; of course I had to look it up.
~~~Your friend needs to ask his oncologist/diagnosing doctor ASAP.~~~
Maybe then check with cancer tx centers for referrals.
My original simple post:
There was a recent thread on oral sx/wisdom teeth: http://www.edhat.com/site/tidbit.cfm?nid=96848
Maybe the same oral surgeons could help. I'm sure they could give recommendations. What did his diagnosing dr. recommend? IF this is a job for an oral surgeon:
Dr. Michajlenko, 687-5541, was extraordinarily careful with my elder and declined to do a procedure on behalf of her safety. IF this is a job for an oral surgeon, I'd recommend a consult with him.
Best bet might be to head for UCLA Head & Neck Oncology Department. They deal with that kind of thing all the time - malignant and benign.
OP here. My friend has an appt next week with his oral surgeon who pulled the tooth and cleaned out the cyst. He wants another opinion. His doctor has only seen this once in 20 years so as you can imagine, he wants another opinion. I did see the previous referrals for oral surgeons, but those were for wisdom teeth and we were hoping to find someone who has experience in these cysts. Thanks for your reply 79P!
David Hall or Marc Bienstock on Pedregosa
both are phenominal oral surgeons.
Dr. Relle in Century City.
You kind of have to travel afar for a good oral surgeon. No one in SB is anywhere near qualified. Stay away from Kiken and definately nix Arnett.
Arnett took out my wisdom teeth...no problems at all- compared with another dentist who took out the other two in Los Angeles - we had definite problems there. ??? Guess it just depends.
Bienstock and Hall were also recommended to me and my parent. - 579P
Sorry, I think like a chicken with its head cut off, in short choppy paragraphs. I still would not consider fixing it before having an oncologist look at it. The pt. needs to be sure an oral surgeon is sufficient. Call every oral surgeon in the county and ask them if they've ever operated on an ameloblastoma. But the original oral surgeon should pass the pt. on to someone familiar with the condition and a medical doctor, preferably an oncologist, should direct medical care.
At least, that's how I'd handle it. If I had insurance. Hope your friend does. - 579
I second calling the Cancer Center to get a referral and I don't believe anyone in town would be a safe bet..good luck to your friend. Oral surgery is serious business people, so this definitely requires someone with some real experience.
My husband had 4 dental implants put in by peridontist Roy Mintzer here is SB. My husband's jaw was quite at risk, and he did a lot of research and met Dr. Mintzer before choosing him. He is quite experienced and has extensive knowledge of the field of dentistry and oral surgery. (Also he's a nice guy.) I don't know if he does this kind of surgery himself, but he's the first person I would ask for a referral. His number is 682-5600.
