Solar Company
updated: Sep 13, 2012, 3:40 PM

I have a small building in the back of my property that's too far from the main panel to feasibly run a line out there. Does anyone have recommendations for a local solar company that could install a stand alone system? Just need enough for a couple of outlets; and want to do it legally too. Thank you!

Sun pacific solar. They are almost done with an installation for me, good references, the owner is personally on site, they re-worked the system a few times to meet our needs. Of course I haven't tested it yet, so this might be premature. But they have been great to work with.

Another vote for Sun Pacific. We had an array put up earlier this year. Really good guys, very polite. Even after the installation, they're always available to answer any questions we have.

SUN PACIFIC are the bestest. NOT REC - bad

As well as the solar panels you will need a battery bank and DC-to -AC Inverter. I applaud your idea, but costs will add up quickly. How long is the 'run' of wiring you need?

706 - more than 40 feet, and would have to dig 18" ditch under concrete sidewalk, etc. Plus I just like the idea of using the sun...the shed roof is new and has southern exposure. Thanks to everyone for their ideas!

Putting power in a building requires a permit for building. Outbuildings under 120 sq. ft. with no utility power and not for human habitation do not need permits.

If you want to avoid the permit process, you can use a low voltage installation, even with solar. Run your lights directly off the battery. There are several types of R.V. lights that can run directly off 12 volts, including LED and florescent fixtures.

REC Solar company. We had them do our system in 2005, and it has run without flaw. Recently had the roof replaced, and they did the panel work.

REC Solar did my work in 2006, fantastic job and follow-up years later when I had a blackout (not related to solar) and they were right on the job. I pay $1.98 a month for years now and well worth it even if I didn't have the "pays-for-itself in x-number of years" incentive. Feels soooo good to be off the grid (so-to-speak).

REC does not do battery based or "stand alone" systems. The only do grid tie only. They stick to the easy bread and butter.

Please steer clear of the Solar Energy Company. He doesn't pay his bills, and does very poor quality work.

Sun Pacific is just plugging the heck out of themselves here wouldn't you say?

Also, please don't do 12 volt circuits in a modern home, you won't get shocked, but a fire hazard it is.

Stay away from REC. they ripped out walls and insulation and left it. Insalled crooked conduit. Left debris all over. They are dishonest about referral fees. Promised $500 but then paid only $200 with a lame reason.
