Well, Do You?

Recently I was having a conversation with friends and we had a debate on something that I thought was completely normal but they adamantly disagreed. I wanted to get the edhat opinion on a somewhat weird topic. Do you pee when you're in the shower?

Pee is totally sterile. You can actually drink it. There are people who even say there are health benefits to drinking it (this I don't agree with). In fact, if you are ever stranded with no water, you can keep yourself alive by drinking your pee, pee it back out, drink it again, and so on.

Peeing in the shower is OK. Especially for women. Standing to pee more fully empties the bladder. Peeing in the shower once in a while could help prevent bladder infections that are much more common in women.

Of course! Why not? Pee is sterile and it beats wasting water in the toilet when you're about to shower anyway.

COMMENT 319478 agree helpful negative off topic

2012-09-13 03:16 PM

You can't stay alive by drinking your pee as the salts in it will build up in your body as you recycle it until you destroy your kidneys. Maybe you can do it once or twice but not indefinitely without any other source of liquid to dilute the salts.

I knew a guy that had a really bad burn on his hand, looked horrible, and then two weeks later I saw him again and he was fully healed. I asked him what he had done, and he told me that he peed on it several times a day. I was amazed but also resolved to never shake his hand again.

I knew a plumber that was totally grossed out by the thought of people peeing in the shower, which said to me he was in the wrong business.

478 - if you are stranded for a long enough time to build up kidney stones or destroy your kidneys, then you would probably have died by then anyway. Its a survival tactic to try and stay alive as long as you can to get rescued. Not something to do "indefinitely".

I never mentioned it to anyone, how vastly nauseating this noisy showering was to me. Then, one morning, my lover came outside and suddenly started in with a perfect imitation of this repulsive shower habit, as produced by our neighbor. It was hilarious.

The really progressive permaculture types advocate peeing outside because it not only saves water but pee contains many of the things (probably more) that we fertilize plants with. As this was the practice for hundreds of thousands of years before toilets were invented (I'm including Cro Mags in there) it's probably the highest and best use for pee. I don't know what it would do to lawn grass though. Some plants are probably better candidates for this kind of watering than others.

'K, I know in advance that Edhat Nanny is probably going to make short shrift of this, but while we're on the subject...

My second car is a right-hand drive VW Beetle. One day on a trip to LA in said Beetle, I was positively busting for a pee between Camarillo and Thousand Oaks. What to do? Well, there was an empty McDonald's 20-ounce soda cup rolling around on the floor, so at 65 mph I proceded to use it as McDonald's never intended, if you know what I mean and I think you do. The problem: what do you DO with a 20-ounce container of effluent when you don't want it in your car?

You roll down the window and pour it out, is what you do if you're me. I didn't notice until I had already done the deed that the vehicle I'd just passed--at 65 mph--was a Baptist school bus. The driver sounded an angry horn at me, while simultaneously turning on his windshield wipers.

I laughed all the way to Hollywood.

Blowing your nose in the shower is the best way to clean out your sinuses without them being irritated by harsh tissue. What's gross about it when you are washing your hand and face right after and the snot goes down the drain? Also pee in the shower and don't get bladder infections but I used to before I stopped being uptight about peeing in the shower. Oh and yes, I am the technical definition of a WASP although I'm not religious (remember the 'P' is for Protestant). I guess I'm just not a germophobe. Personally, I think the germophobes get sick more often because they never build up immunities against things.

Absolutely not. Would you want to stand/sit in the residue of someone else's urine? See Cornell University post of bacteria in urine. The problem is that we don't always know who is sick, producing bacteria in urine, and spreading diseases.

I don't think there's any harm in peeing in the shower. As for nose blowing, which my husband does, I only have one objection to it. On occasion, I'll notice a big ol' booger stuck to the shower wall. This immediately causes a serious gag reflex. It's worse than finding a spider in the shower!

For the record, I also cannot STAND hairy soap. Just sayin.

And for those of you who admit peeing in the pool and/or hot tub, thanks a lot! I'll never swim in the pool at our gym again! Same gag reflex, that's seriously disgusting. Period.

COMMENT 320638 agree helpful negative off topic

Peeing in the pool or hot tub is rude and messes up the water chemistry. It chews up chlorine contributing to the 'chlorine' smell as yet more chemicals have to be added. Get out of the water, check the propeller on some garden plants, then hose em down. The plants will be happy. Now get back in the tub. Thank you.

Of course I pee in the shower, I thought everyone did. My whole family pees in the shower--it goes down the drain, with LOTS of water so there is no back up of pee. And blowing noses in the shower. Again, who wouldn't? A lot of folks are grossed out by a lot of stuff. Why is that? I have two teenage boys, we have a really clean house, nothing smells, we all pee in the shower and I tell them to blow their noses in the shower when they are stuffed up. Americans...shesh...kinda paranoid of...what...not sure.
