Another Pedestrian versus Vehicle
updated: Sep 13, 2012, 9:00 AM

By Edhat Subscriber

I just heard about another pedestrian or bicyclist being hit by a car near Walnut Lane this morning. Did anyone else hear about this?

Man walked into the roadway and was struck by a westbound motorist on Hollister Avenue, according to the CHP. (09/14/12)

279... we don't even know if this collision too place since the OP is not trusting their source and looking for a second source to confirm it.

Yes, I heard a mention on KUSC-FM; not said was where the bicyclist (no apostrophe for singular or plural) was riding. I don't know the circumstances of this, but seems to me that, where available, sidewalks should be considered usable by bicyclists (no apostrophe) on fast-moving through routes such as Hollister, an important cross-town bike route. There are several schools in that area and motorists often drive much too fast.

@319270,
As you stated: "Here in this little State of California, you are considered a vehichle and must abide by all traffic rules"

So the first part of your comment : "Get out of the middle of the car lane" really makes you sound like a fool. Are vehicles in your mind not allowed to be in a lane?

270- since bicyclists are considered a vehicle that means they have the same right to be in the middle of the lane as a car. good job

If you walk or ride a bike in the same lane as a 4000 pound vehicle moving at 35 MPH you are asking to be hit. It is not a matter of having the right of way. It is a matter of having enough common sense to stay out of the street and walk on the sidewalk. I believe it is time to consider banning bicycles from using motor vehicle traffic lanes. This would save thousands of lives and prevent tens of thousands of serious injuries. Traveling by bike accounts for less than 1% of all vehicle miles traveled. Bike transportation is not a significant mode of travel and can be eliminated with no impact on society.

270... considering your interest in rules, review the comments policy... specifically 6a and 9.

298: on your theory, a grossly obese person should stay of the sidewalks, except those which are extra wide?

I know a bicyclist was hit at Walnut Pk. Dr. and Ribera by Foothill School Thursday morning. Felt sorry for the young woman sitting on the curb as measurements were taken of her car in the intersection. I understood he just broke his nose, but think he was transported by the paramedics.
