The Santa Barbara Police Department will be conducting a directed patrol regarding bicycle safety
enforcement on Thursday September 13, 2012. This directed patrol will primarily deal with bicycle
violations that can cause traffic collisions. During the past year the city of Santa Barbara has
experienced an increase in bicycle involved traffic collisions and the most recent Office of Traffic Safety
data has ranked Santa Barbara #3 out of 103 similarly sized cities in the state for bicycle collisions.
Motorcycle Officers will be out in force watching for bicyclists who commit violations such as:
-Failing to stop at red lights
-Failing to stop at mid-block red lights (State Street)
-Failing to stop at stop signs
-Wearing two headphones or ear plugs
-Riding on the sidewalk
-Riding the wrong way on a one way street
Officers will also be enforcing motorist violations that lead to bicycle collisions.
The Santa Barbara Police Department encourages everyone on the road including bicyclists and motorist
to ride and drive safely.
