Sardine Toxins
updated: Sep 11, 2012, 8:00 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

A subscriber reports that Sardines down the coast Ventura way recently tested high in domoic acid, a toxin produced by some dinoflagellates they like to eat. Unless you like being paralyzed you might avoid eating local sardines and anchovies until the algal bloom subsides. Always, always, always gut plankton- feeding fish carefully, and discard any where the stomach has been ruptured.

You can check local marine toxin levels at http://www.cdph.ca.gov/HealthInfo/environhealth/water/Pages/Shellfishreports.aspx
