9/11 Remembrance
updated: Sep 11, 2012, 9:15 AM

It's been 11 years since the tragedy of 9/11 and it's important to remember those who passed. My co- workers and I are taking moments of silence and discussing where we were when it happened. How are other community members remembering these events?

I woke up and watched MSNBC that was showing their broadcast from 9/11/01.

I remember those brave passengers that tried to retake their plane and prevented it from being crashed into another building. And lost their lives in the process. I hope their families get some small comfort out of knowing what heroes those people were.

I happened upon the flags and bagpipes down on west beach. I was surprised at how moved I felt, after all these years....

I lost a couple of friends on 9/11 that were in the WTC. I actually think about them just about once every day. Apparently there are a lot of people now with lung cancer that inhaled all the dust on that dreadful day.

A flag lapel pin and driving with lights on in quiet reflection of the colleagues our company lost in 2 WTC and a prayer for all who gave their innocent lives along with the brave responders who may now give theirs through debilitating cancer and lung disease.

I visited Ground Zero a few months following the attacks ,,, I felt absolutely compelled to be there, to witness this event and it's aftermath. The sheer enormity was too great to absorb through the news coverage. It had shattered the psyche of the American nation and had seeply affected me as well. The site was nearly completely cleared by that time,,, the sidewalks and awnings of the surrounding neighborhood were scrubbed clean. Damage to adjacent buildings was still clearly evident, although repairs had begun. The temporary viewing stand and wall of names was marked with a steady stream of somber observers ,,, an 8-foot chain link fence surrounded the entire four city block area. Adorning the top of much of the fencing near St. Paul's Chapel and the site were caps and shirts and jackets of visiting Emergency personnel from around the country and the globe in tribute to those who had fallen there.

The attacks were a "shock and awe" event, designed to render the public so psychologically battered that elements of responsible citizenship - for example questioning government - became taboo. Rational debate on 9/11 has also been consigned to a no go area in the mainstream media, and those who dare ask the (hundreds of) difficult, or unanswered questions relating to those events are routinely spat upon as "being unpatriotic", in a despicable display of infantilism and cowardice that would bring tears of grief to the eyes of the Founding Fathers... not just for the victims of the attacks, but the gradual death of our open society.

In the early 1940s, when the initial rumors of the Holocaust were starting to surface, many "good Germans", even those who (privately) loathed Hitler and company, would lash out with similar conspiracy theory accusations - "you're mad, they would never go that far". The truth came out. It always does, even if it takes a long time.

Going to take the rest of the day off to enjoy and relax. Glad we don't have the problem with Islams here locally putting up temples and such, worshiping a BS religion. Glad I don't live in Great Britain or Canada where these people are moving into in droves and pose a security threat, are taking over neighborhoods with their Eastern thinking and way of life. Not all Islams are bad, but the lifestyle centered around the religion is. Beating your wife is the norm, making them cover in veils. I personally hold major resentments against anyone who kills or fights wars over a written word in a book. It is all BS, the only true religion is evolution and perhaps believing in a higher power if it motivates you or makes you be a better person, have a cohesive family life, and aligns you with solid citizens, the rest is rubbish.

Islam = Religion
Muslim = An adherent of Islam

If you're going to disparage a religion followed by over a billion people, you should at least get the terminology right.

I was there when it happened, and the events of that day will forever be burned in my mind. It's still traumatic after all this time, and the feelings are so strong, it's actually hard to watch the old videos from the news. I remember the smell, and visiting the site on Thanksgiving and it was still burning. And driving by the local commuter lot that night on my way to get some dinner and it was full at 8 p.m. and I couldn't help but wonder how many owners of those cars wouldn't be returning to them. And it's true, what the news showed just couldn't match or capture what it really looked like. Today for sure I miss NYC and wish I could be there, so I'm just checking in on Facebook to see what my east coast (and west coast) friends are posting and sharing. Wish I could've been at the West Beach event. The picture looks so moving.

668 demonstrates his cowardly, comfort-zone addicted, anti-American colors. An open, free society is not scared of open discussion. 668, in his anonymity, is clearly terrified of such, for whatever reason... and that is exactly what the terrorists -whoever they were/are, wanted to do to us. Don't forget that President Bush *ironically* claimed that "they attacked us because they hated our freedoms".

668's threats of violence, without an argument, makes him more a friend of those who attacked us, rather than what America truly stands for.

I helped set up the flag memorial on West Beach this morning, stuck around for the bagpipes to play "Amazing Grace" when the two planes hit the towers, had a moment of silence at lunch and am wearing patriotic attire all day.

Not doing anything "in remembrance." Just recall staring at the t.v. screen, family gathered. Wondering how plane hits these towers. Then saw the second plane hit. Disbelief. Shock. Horror.
Film footage of people running from clouds of destruction. Still cannot quite grasp it all.

The "American Dream", should no longer be used as a term. We need to secure our borders, stop immigration and integration, evidence has shown that races cannot exist together cohesively without one race fighting another in all socioeconomic spectrums, immigrants can't and will not assimilate to our country instead they expect us to assimilate to their traditions and 3rd world living. White's are the minority in a country that was to be shared between White's and Native Americans, and when they spoke of "bring us your masses", they were taking about Europeans, not Hispanics and every other we allow to live here. Blacks were brought in for work, they did the job, and should have been shipped out, instead we kept them and have them still claiming reciprocation.I am sick of this liberal left-wing rhetoric thinking, take a stand and take our soil back before it is gone forever.

While we honor in remembrance those 2900+ who died on that horrific morning, we forget the *al least* 1200 people to date, many being first responders who rushed towards danger to help others, who have since died as a result of illnesses, often cancer, contracted from breathing the toxic dust from three huge pulverized buildings.

Right after 9/11, the office of the Vice President, via the CEQ (Council on Environmental Quality headed by James Connaughton), ordered EPA to sanitize/"tone down" the danger/toxicity aspect of the dust. Christie Todd Whitman, EPA Sec. followed orders and (mis)informed New Yorkers that the "air was safe to breathe and the water was safe to drink". GZ workers were even ordered *not* to wear protective clothing and masks, so as not to interfere with Wall Street operations.

It has now taken 11 years for these heroes to get just *some* of the medical help they need, with Congress dragging their heels every step of the way. Shame on them.

How to commemorate this anniversary? Figure out how to not permit this again. There were apparently a lot of warnings before this stunning thing happened. I want a politically neutral investigation into what happened and how to structure our governmental agencies to work together on our behalf to keep us safe. Don't much care about Iraq or Iran.

723, no trolling just speaking the truth that you refuse to acknowledge. You are still so caught up with peace and love to realize that 60's thinking was a period that actually hurt this country. You are trapped in a time warp, and don't understand politics at it's core. Do as you please, view change in the US and the world as good as it brings diversity and cross-cultural exchange. You are naive and have no mind of your own, just the liberal one you paid for in college. I am not alone, when or if you live to see 30 years you will be ill-equipped to deal with what is going on and will be kicking yourself for not doing any preparedness or research of your own. When you are in dire straits don't come banging on my door, I no sympathy for your sort nor will lift a finger or give you a penny to save you from your ignorant thinking and the repercussions.

Easy to be reminded of it when a group of lunatic Muslims attack the U.S. embassy, set it on fire kill three American staffers and hoist a black flag saying in Arabic "the only god is Allah and Muhammed is his messenger". I will never forget 911 and the fact that the so called moderate Muslims have done and said little to supress the fanatical fringes of their religion while claiming Islam is a religion of peace. Almost everyday we are reminded, whether it is women beng stoned for daring to be outside with a man not related, refusing to hide their face or body with a black gunny sack-like Burque or engaging in "honor killings" of their own daughters to placate moronic religious dogma. Islam a religion of "peace" (?) ; nothing could be further from the truth!

I saw the North Tower explode while commuting to my office. I could see the South Tower from my desk in the Trinity Center. My memories are ugly and beautiful, scary and heartbreaking in the love shown. I will always remember and go about my day as usual. I pay homage to those lost, those who fought, those who lost loved ones there and abroad, all the families and the survivors of those attacks.

873:

During the attacks, three white vans were stopped by police - two laden with explosives. One was on the Washington Bridge, another on the NJ Turnpike, and a third in a NJ parking lot where 5 men were reported behaving suspiciously. This news was blasted over the media until it was discovered they were Israelis who worked for Urban Moving Systems, a front company whose owners had fled to Israel days before 9/11.

The men were arrested and taken into custody. Fox News Carl Cameron was told by FBI that "evidence linking these Israelis to 9/11 is classified". "I cannot tell you about evidence that has been gathered. It's classified information." After weeks in custody, they were quietly deported.

Imagine if these people had been Iranian or Palestinian? This part of the 9/11 story would have become huge. Israelis? That doesn't conform with Americans' comfort zone, or what the neoconservatives in the Bush Administration were selling.

I attended an exhibit of photographs at the Karpeles Manuscript Museum a few months after 9/11. The photographs were of all the "missing" flyers that appeared around the site hours and days after the attack. It was an astonishing, heartbreaking exhibit, especially since most of the photographs on the flyers were taken in happy times. The exhibit encouraged each attendee to remember the name of one lost person on one flyer. I chose Giovanna Gambale, a young woman with long dark hair, a beautiful name, and a gorgeous smile. I have her name on a "post-it" over my kitchen sink where I can see it every day. I see the note and say her name. I am determined that she and the thousands of others we lost that day will not be forgotten.
