Freeway Brush Fire

A brush fire on the ocean side of the 101 broke out early Saturday
morning. At about 6:30 a.m. as reported by Roger the Scanner Guy, the
small fire began at a homeless encampment between the railroads
tracks and the freeway. It was located across the freeway from the
Montecito Starbucks.
SBFD Engines 1 and 3 were dispatched and made quick work of
extinguishing the flames. Montecito Fire also responded but SBFD had
already managed the fire well, so their help wasn't needed.
A resident of the homeless encampment had to be roused from his
shelter by the firefighters. It's unclear exactly how the fire started, but
speculation is that the fire was a cooking fire from the prior evenings
dinner. Luckily the weather was calm and there was relatively high
humidity. We shutter to think what this scenario could have been if
Santa Ana winds had been an issue, especially with the nearby
eucalyptus trees and dry brush.
While firefighters were on scene there were several near-accidents on
the freeway. Amazingly, even with multiple highly visible fire trucks on
the freeway, many drivers refuse to slow and drive with greater care.
