Precious Metals
updated: Sep 03, 2012, 1:23 PM

Where in town can I get the most for my jewelry made of precious metals like Gold, Silver, Platinum, etc...? Do they also buy old coinage? What kind of a percentage do they take on the value of the item?

Paul Brombal on upper state by Jannines Bakery. I sell all my left over foreign currency from trips, he also gives market value on gold and silver. There may be somewhere better, but he has been in business for years, and I trust his knowledge. He will tell you to sell or hold onto it for a while depending on the market. Good luck.

Try Peggys in Carp. They're really nice but check on their hours. I don't think anyone anywhere will tell you their percentage.
Skip those sleazy hotel set-ups.

AH Gaspar Jeweler. Stick with an established jeweler, no matter where you go.

I don't care for Brombal too much. He didn't want to give me a fair price for my 1oz gold Maple leaf coin. Fifty dollars under spot is ridiculous!!!! ~~~~~ I have better luck at Gillio's on Figueroa & State. ~~~~ I did my research first, which you should do also, before selling anything. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Check on Ebay also and see whats out there. ~~~~ Weigh the gold and check the current gold prices.~~~~ Get an appraisel. Some places will do that for free. Don't let them know you are selling. ~~~ Good luck.... Tell us about the coins and we can help you on this site.

574 - When you say market value, are you referring to spot prices or "what the market will pay?" I know many pawn shops pay below spot for gold and silver, that's why I ask.

I have bought and sold at Gillio's. I trust them. They have good prices on both ends.

Another vote for Peggy's. Good advice about staying with a reputable jeweler but I'm not sure about free appraisals around town. It's hard to sell family coins and jewelry so make sure you're comfortable with the buyers.

Be extremely careful who you use, when selling your jewelry. It has been my experience that Brombal and Gillio's offered me next to nothing for my quality gold jewlery pieces, even when price of gold was sky-high. I brought all my beautiful things home, rather than "give" them away! The gentleman located next to See's Candies in La Cumbre Plaza is much more legit and honest. (Don't know store name, sorry.)

Peggy's has been around forever. She may give you a better price. You would be better off to put the items on consignment and sell them, or sell them yourself via Ebay. May take longer, but you won't be robbed blind.

If any of your jewelry has gems, don't sell your pieces for the metals----you will not be paid anywhere near fair price, guaranteed.

Don't sell your jewelry on ebay. Just stick w someone reputable in town. Selling gold, etc., is something most of us know nothing about, and it makes us feel more vulnerable to predation. The long-time establishments are going to give you a fair deal. They deserve a profit, and despite the complaints, they're not out to gouge you.

I usually go to Gillios for the 1oz gold Maple Leaf, (not collectible coins) and they give me a good price, but when I tried selling a smaller coin, I ended up on Ebay, because Gillios would only pay a fraction compared to Ebay. ~~~
Even the woman at Gillios looked at Ebay while we were there and she still wouldn't match the price. She said she was very shocked to see how much that smaller gold coin was selling for on Ebay!!!~~~~ Collectible gold coins are different than the straight Maple Leafs (canadian), or the Krugerands (africa), or the american gold eagles.

I found some very useful information about buying and selling gold, silver and other precious metals at this site:

Interesting. For those of you who did sell an ounce of gold, if the melt value is $1,700/oz, any idea on how much they would offer? What is the difference between market and spot values?

Two years ago, Brombal had much better prices than Gillio. I guess it's the downtown rent vs. San Roque.

Brombal and Gillio's both won't pay you what it's worth. They are in it for the profit. I saw a lady paid $3,000 from one of them, during the height of gold market. She had a lot of rings and necklaces, some with gems. I would have loved to see her pieces, as these dealers don't pay you a dime on any diamonds or rubies or such gems.

They only want the gold, or so they say. You're better off researching prices and selling it yourself on eBay or on consignment.

6606 of course they are in for a profit. They didn't go into business to give you a free service. Because of the price of gold many of these pieces do get melted. Yes shop your pieces around and get the best price. The older established businesses like Gillio, Patco, Gaspar, and Brombal are likely to pay more than others.

Forgot to mention, california law makes buyers of 2nd hand jewelery submit reports of purchaces to law enforcement agencies and then hold the pieces for 30 days. Because the price of gold is changing constently the buyer must take that into account when buying "scrap" gold. Also the dealer has to sell the gold to a refiner who also has to make a profit

I have this site as my "home" page. It also shows "spot" price for gold below the chart. I like the site because you can see what's happening on Ebay too. ~~~~~~

What about Patco on Haley Street... he has been in town over 30 years and I trust him completely!
