updated: Sep 02, 2012, 1:14 PM

A subscriber would like recommendations for the best dentists who accept Costco's dental insurance.

Yikes, do you mean Delta Dental HMO through Costco? I believe there are only a few dentists that accept Delta Dental in Santa Barbara, including Sea Breeze, Gentle Dental, and Western Dental. I looked into all of these when I was considering Costco dental insurance and decided it wasn't worth it. You might try posting in the Ventura edhat to see if anyone has recommendations down there.

I've heard great things about Gentle Dental . . . but I've never been there. I go to Dr. John Phraener who is great.

My eyesight is fading rather rapidly due to cataracts and a stigmatism in one eye. Although I have paid into SS during all of my working years, due to recent cuts and regulations, I don't qualify for any government medical insurance as of yet, as I'm "only" 60 years old, and benefits for me won't kick in until 5 more years even though I have helped pay for them throughout my lifetime.

I live on an income that is just above their "poverty level", but not enough to buy any kind of medical insurance (and am just barely able to pay my monthly bills, as food and gas prices have risen so quickly and dramatically over the last few years).

Pretty soon I will no longer be able to drive to get to work, and that means I will lose my job, as it entails a lot of driving. If that happens, I will become homeless, as my career or moving opportunities will be nill.

Does anyone know of an eye doctor or medical fund that can correct cataracts so I can keep going? I have put in thirty years of non-profit, often for free work, doing without benefits and insurance coverage, believing that what I did eventually would pay me back in basic medical care (which, at that time was guaranteed).

Any advice from readers, aside from the common (why didn't you do this and that, you were stupid) kind? My life has been about service and good faith. But I am going blind, and simply need a cataract operation that will keep me going.

352P talk to the people at the County Public Health and see if they can give you any suggestions.

The SB Indian clinic will do it for you, they don't even require you to be a registered Indian for their clinic. Also, La Cumbre Dental aka Johnsons Family Dental, does free clinics once in a while and they are top notch. Call them and see what they can do for you, they could probably figure it out

How do people evaluate the actual quality of dental care in order to judge one dental office over another?

That is an oxymoron because the best dentists DON'T accept Costco insurance!

@315580P

You have apparently misparsed the OP's request (I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt and assuming that you didn't deliberately misconstrue it.) The question is who is the best of those who accept CostCo insurance ... it is not a question about which of the best dentists accept CostCo insurance.
