My eyesight is fading rather rapidly due to cataracts and a stigmatism in one eye. Although I have paid into SS during all of my working years, due to recent cuts and regulations, I don't qualify for any government medical insurance as of yet, as I'm "only" 60 years old, and benefits for me won't kick in until 5 more years even though I have helped pay for them throughout my lifetime. I live on an income that is just above their "poverty level", but not enough to buy any kind of medical insurance (and am just barely able to pay my monthly bills, as food and gas prices have risen so quickly and dramatically over the last few years). Pretty soon I will no longer be able to drive to get to work, and that means I will lose my job, as it entails a lot of driving. If that happens, I will become homeless, as my career or moving opportunities will be nill. Does anyone know of an eye doctor or medical fund that can correct cataracts so I can keep going? I have put in thirty years of non-profit, often for free work, doing without benefits and insurance coverage, believing that what I did eventually would pay me back in basic medical care (which, at that time was guaranteed). Any advice from readers, aside from the common (why didn't you do this and that, you were stupid) kind? My life has been about service and good faith. But I am going blind, and simply need a cataract operation that will keep me going.
