Starfish Flower
updated: Sep 01, 2012, 2:36 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

One out of two Stapelia Gigantea blooms to open in my back yard. These blooms smell like rotten meat and attract gobs of flies. They get pollen on their feet and legs while laying their eggs. The eggs hatch and the flower begins to close very tightly and fall off. This process takes about a week. Now a week later, the another bloom has just opened. Another name for the flower is "starfish flower".
