Alta Mesa Gunfire
updated: Sep 01, 2012, 11:04 AM

Does anyone know anything about the massive gun fire after 10:30 pm last night? On Alta Mesa I heard about 10-20 pop-pop's followed by a burst from a fully automatic weapon. In over 30yrs here I have NEVER heard anything like it.

I also heard and thought it might have been fireworks, but when I looked out my 'birdseye view' apartment window, there were none. Sure would like to know what it was.

Likely individual firecrackers followed by a brick.

Likely gunshots, because guns and ammo are legal and easy to obtain, unlike fireworks.

If you knew the location of where these shots were originating from did you inform law enforcement? I hear these kinds of gunshots all the time but they seem to come from the hills where there are large properties and ranches where private property rights allow for such discharges.

Police said it was fireworks.. I remember hearing that. The cop reported hearing it and that is what he said.

There are really loud firecrackers and if you let a string of them off at once they do sound like guns. In Hawaii it was a custom to set them off at midnight on New Years Eve. They would make a fair sized ball with chicken wire, fill it up and the resulting sound was like a war zone. We lived a mile from Kailua-Kona and could hear the noise for quite some time.

I heard it too, but it was definitely the sound of fireworks. My poor doggie gets terrified every time.

I lived up there for years and sometimes heard rifle shots. When I reported it to SBPD I was told they suspected it was someone shooting at coyotes but that apparently none of the closer neighbors would file a complaint so they didn't know who had been doing it.
