Channel Island Chariot
updated: Aug 31, 2012, 8:10 PM
I would like advice on which cruise company to use for a day trip to the Channel Islands. I am looking for one that caters more to nature lovers (ideally with info about birds, whales, etc.) than piped in music and an open bar kind of thing. Recommendations, please? Thank you!

Island Packers out of Ventura. They have great staff, and along on the trips are volunteers from the Naturalists' Corps--very well trained and informative. The Island Packers staff are also well informed and they send their own guide along when you get off at Prisoners' Harbor and take the hike to Pelican Bay. I think that's the best and prettiest way to visit Santa Cruz on a day trip. I know this sounds like an ad, but I'm just a really happy fan.

I agree: Island Packers, if you want to hike; Condor Express, if you don't.

Also pleased with Island Packers out of Ventura. They let you go off and hike on your own if you don't want to stay with the group. We were surrounded by a super pod (hundreds) of dolphins coming back that blew my mind. Check weather conditions first since it can get rough out there but should be perfect this time of year.

If you want to land and go ashore on the islands, Island Packers is the only authorized concessionaire to Channel Islands National Park. They have been taking people out to the islands for over 40 years and are experts. These trips are their bread and butter, this is what they do best. Nicest crew and all very knowledgeable about the natural history. It's a a longer drive to Ventura but I can tell you from many many trips across the channel to the islands, the boat ride is better from that angle than straight across from Santa Barbara. If you want SB-based whale watching on a party boat with knowledgeable staff, go Condor. If you want a real nature experience, whether whale watching or going ashore on the islands, go IPCo. There is a reason the Park Service has continued to award them the only concession contract for the park.... ENJOY!!!
