PIZZA TRUCK STUCK
updated: Aug 31, 2012, 12:54 PM

By the Urban Hikers

UPDATE: It turns out the frozen pizzas fared pretty well. Rather than have the pizzas rot in a salvage yard, the Red Baron manager at the scene of the truck accident suggested to firefighters that if they could find a worthy cause for the pizzas, Red Baron would donate the still frozen pizzas. Firefighters got hold of the Food Bank and Unity Shoppe. Both organizations were willing and able to take the pizzas, so they split the 800 pizzas between them. Thank you Red Baron.

On Thursday morning a delivery truck filled with frozen pizzas got stuck under the railroad bridge at the Hot Springs/Carrillo off ramp leading to Los Patos Way, near the bird refuge. At about 10:30 a.m., the truck, southbound on the 101, was on its way to deliver piazzas to the Von's on Coast Village Rd. According to CHP on scene, the driver, who was using his GPS to navigate the rental truck, failed to see the posted warning signs about the low bridge ahead and with the sudden impact and noise of crushing metal the truck ended up wedged under the railroad bridge. Fortunately the driver was not physically injured.

The refrigerator unit on the truck was badly damaged and inoperable. The fate of the frozen pizzas is unknown at this time. Passenger and freight trains in both directions were stopped until the truck could be removed and the bridge inspected to ensure that it was safe.

Santa Barbara Fire, CHP, Caltrans and railroad officials responded.
