Brief power outage at CVS on the Mesa this morning. Heard pharmacist say that
they never have this problem. Other power outages a couple of weeks ago on
Mesa. Could this be from the new digital Smart Meter system? Could someone
check with Edison?

My smart meter was installed about a month ago. Ever since, my Internet is much faster, refrigerator is colder and quieter, the air smells sweeter, the stereo has more bass, my headaches are gone, and my electric bills are down.

Wow just watched his videos. People believe this crank! His first claim - that the utility companies will not explain the need for smart meters! er... because paying a person to come on to your property once a month is a ridiculous cost in the age of wireless communication. There, are we good. Okay bye then.

Google and view the You Tubes by Jerry Day. You can remove them. You don't have to pay more. The impact on health is documented and they do not just monitor your usage. They report on what you are using and when.

The winning comment here is, 'Can we upgrade to smart citizens?' Properly installed smart meters have nothing to do with power outages. Most outages are accidental. If and when the electricity provider purposefully shuts some customers power off, during an over-usage event, they let the customers know beforehand.

My smart meter is so smart that it called my cell phone on Tuesday to tell me that my power would be out on Wednesday. And it was!

We are moving into the future with blinders on. The accumulative effects of smarts meters, cell phones, WiFi and the rest are still unknown. WHO did determine cell phone use as a carcinogen, so "we" are not making all this up. I don't tell you not to use a cell phone or smart meter, so please don't tell me how to live the most healthy life I know how to and don't bribe me into having to pay more for technology I choose not to have in my home!

I have had a smart meter for quite some time. Service and cost haven't changed. The smart meters don't control anything inside our homes nor can they "see" what we're doing with our appliances like our computers. They are the same as the previous meters with the added ability to transmit usage data to Edison. BTW I'm an engineer but don't work for a utility.

I have a smart meter for a few months and I live on the Mesa. My electicity does not go off any more often than it always has (which has always been frequent), my bill has not gone up and so far I have not grown an eye in the middle of my forehead. The smart meter has been a huge non-event, other than no longer having a meter reader barge into my yard to get at the meter. I am all for it.

Since they installed my smart meter my car has gotten worse mileage, my coworkers are ruder, and hurricane Isaac developed. Brave new world.

Power-out on the west mesa a block or so from CVS this am, also Cox internet so slow again I timed out trying to pay bill. Power-outs around here are frequent enough I've been using battery operated analog clocks so I don't have to keep resetting digital clocks on stove, microwave, etc -boy, life is rough. Actually, I tried to submit this, Cox out again.

018, some people think that smart meters can control power delivery in the home, turning off appliances and such. They don't understand that such control would require modifying the wiring inside the home. It's the modern version of putting a bucket under the light socket so there wouldn't be a puddle when the TVA turned the juice on. Nearly a century later, electricity is still magic to some people.

061 sure hope you don't let that "electrician" friend anywhere near your homes electrics. I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and hope you just misheard. smart meters can gauge power used and do report this information but what on earth you think they can read on your computer I have no idea and how that relates to wifi use? Your explanation of your buddies info is baffling. Please take a deep breath and think rationally for a minute about smart meters, no one is out to get you. it will all be okay. bless. can we upgrade edhat to smart comments?

Don't want to fan the flames, but here goes anyway . . . Had an electrician pal of mine tell me that smart meters have capability to read computer use, gage power used. Apparently those of us with old style meters are not going to be paying for our wi-fi the way smart meter users will pay. Over my head, as I am not electrical engineer. Any thoughts on this? Also: If you have "Lifeline" and pay less for electricity to begin with, Edison charges you less to opt out: $10 initial fee and $5 more per month (as opposed to $75 initial fee and $10 more per month). Bet most of you reading this didn't know that. I sure didn't, until last month. And for person with three dogs and no notice, call Edison and tell them you want that meter removed----now.

Got my smart meter in June, no problems. I run a server at home so would know if there were any glitches (it sends a text to my cell). A friend had problems right after his smart meter install, but it was due to an installation problem. SCE went out the next day and fixed it.

I don't think "smart meters" are the only issue at Edison Try and explain that they sent you a bill for a building with nothing electrical left, fire, with the power shut off by fire dept at the meter (bill arrived for time period weeks after the fire and the demo-demo crew had to bring their own power) She explained we must have left the lights on, figured she was a dim bulb or has never seen a fire.

Honest question-Why would smart meters have anything to do with a power outage? We have had brown and black outs for ever, why would it suddenly be the fault of smart meters. Can we upgrade to smart citizens?

no. the meter also didn't spoil your milk, nominate romney or kill your cat. it's just a meter that can broadcast your monthly usage to a central point.

949 - Ojai passed a "ceremonial" resolution against smart meters but didn't and can't opt out. But YOU had (and still have) the opportunity to opt out, if you read the SCE bill inserts. You'll have to pay extra each month to do so.

I opted out. We live in a very old house with very old wiring. If it ain't broke, don't fix it-that's my philosophy. I didn't want to take any chances (I heard about the possible fire issues with those.) Ojai was able to opt out entirely. We are charter city, why couldn't we do the same? Why did our leaders roll over for this "iffy" technology?

At my home on the Mesa the power went out today at 10:45AM and came on at 10:47AM. I know of al least a dozen homes that lost power.
