If you're a tad savvy, doing a master/slave hard drive procedure with another computer usually works pretty easily. Find a working computer and google it!

That's kind of like asking who does surgery that really works... it really depends on what happened to your computer. Many times a "crash" is just a corruption of the operating system that doesn't effect data. Sometimes it means the hard drive physically broke which requires a much greater level of expertise.

You can attach your hard drive to another computer using an external enclosure and see if your data is still available. The enclosures are pretty cheap, around $30-60 at best buy (Fry's is better but less convenient being in Oxnard)

If you still need help I charge $65/hr and I make house calls. emi@emiphoto.com

OP can you describe your problem in detail? I have been fixing windows based pc's for over 20 years. But to point you in the right direction. I will need more info. Does it even power up? etc??

OP here...the drives works fine. What happen is our computer crashed and we backup everything to an external drive. We thought we had unplugged it from the computer before we restored it, but we didn't. so external hard drive was restored also. Best Buy couldn't help..friend did get a few pictures off. thanks for ANY help!!

Latitude 34 in Old Town Goleta next door to Natural Cafe is the best computer repair I've found in the SB area. They are meticulous, professional, and wonderful people to work with. The owners are a great local family. I've used Latitude for my home PC for a couple of years now.

961- Ah, the old "I f-disked the wrong drive" blunder. A classic yet devastating mistake. Really takes me back.

If it's a Mac I recommend Robert Fields of Fields Consulting. He's based in Ventura but has many clients here in SB/Goleta. The office I work in uses his services and I've used him myself. Great service. 805-650-2770

Don't take it to CompuVision.. those guys will over charge you for what would probably equate to a new computer.
Find out if your machine is still under warranty first and work with the manufacturer.

If that is not an option then try to do the above mentioned practice of taking out the hard drive from your machine and connecting it to a computer that is functioning.

Assuming your hard drive is a windows based operating system, once it's properly connected (attaching the data cable and the power cable to the drive to the mother board) and the hardware is still operating correctly, you would see it as a new drive letter (typically F:\) under "my computer" where you should then easily be able to retrieve data.

If the drive suffered a hardware failure, then you may need to seek a professional data recovery business which can be easily googled for prices.

If this works, I am owed one delicous beer.

Channel Data Systems in the El Mercado. They are the best local recovery. They we able to recover all my baby pictures for a fraction of the price of sending it out of town.

For ALL of my computer related problems, including data retrieval, I use Hugh at Human Solutions: 805-563-1257. He got data off of a crashed hard drive I would never have believed possible. He's fair, thorough and reasonable. You can trust him.

As computer experts (been in busness 27 years) we recommend 2 places for the home market:
CompuWest 111 East Yanonali
Santa Barbara, CA 93101 (805) 962-2828
Channel Data Systems 4141 State Street Santa Barbara, CA 93110 (805) 964-6695 Don't go to Staples, Best Buy, etc. where you will probably find grad students.
CompuVision is our computer colleague for over 15 years. Their fees are at times higher, but they specialize in the network business environment and are worth their fees.

Human Solutions Computers since 1990. 805-563-1257
$35 to attempt recovery, good odds if the disk is spinning and detected by the bios. Data recovery charged as normal labor, not 'starting at $500', starting at $35. Typically $105-$175
Otherwise we are partners with Kroll Ontrack, Discsavers, and Datacent and can save 10% on their services. These services do start at $500 and can be as high as $2700 so keep your backups current folks and check them too!
