We use Culligan. Undersink filter. Costs $1200 or so to install, but then its maybe $100 every two years for filters. Bottled water is more expensive and wasteful - gas, bottles, billing, etc. And we rent and have never had any trouble getting landlord permission to install, or trouble moving it.

Buy a water filter we use everpure H104 about $200 installed. Way cheaper and better water. If you are paying to have delivered water.............You deserve to pay for it.

I'm a big fan of reverse osmosis. I have had a $200 Costco system, made by Watts, under my sink for 7 years. A lot of bottled water is produced exactly the same way, (read the label) but with your own system you leave out the transportation costs and the exposure to plastic containers. The yearly cost is $40 for filters.

I also have a Costco reverse osmosis system, less than $200. I've had it for 20 years and changed the filters only once. Installed it myself. It does help a lot if you have a water softener to go with it.

Go to Costco's website. They have a deal for Sparkletts water delivery (search "Water"). Plans Starting As Low As $15.99 per 4 week period for Executive Members.

Rayne didn't charge for the installation at the time and I pay 19.95 a month for the filter. They maintain it, the only thing I had to pay extra for was the spigot because I wanted a different finish then what they offered.

Wow. Imagine my relief to know my crappy little condo came with running water included in the rent.

We have found that the Brita water filter works fine, and doesn't coat anywhere near $19.00 a month! Costco carries them at a good price.

Our most recent house that we bought came with Rayne serviced reverse osmosis. We've continued to rent it at $20/month plus tax and get it services free every year which includes a new filter. We drink a LOT of water in our house. :-) refillable bottles only, no wasteful excess transportation involved, and we're super happy with the taste and service. Highly recommend.

Rayne has provided fantastic and very inexpensive service to elders who have water softeners -- I wanted to praise them. They deliver and fill the pre-installed softener with salt. I imagine they'd be as good with drinking water service.

yeah, the tap is pretty bad. You'd think they could show us some love and do one extra filter for taste or something. Goleta water district, what do you think?

I second the Brita filter. Why pay some huge amount of money for delivery, when all you are getting is filtered water? Brita filters are easy to use, cost approx $20 for four filters (shop around). One filter lasts up to three months, depending on if you (like me) enjoy using filtered water to make pasta and such. Delivered water is just silly. Big noisy trucks, strangers coming up to your house, neighbors' dogs barking. And you are adding to air pollution by using up fossil fuel. Plus the water is all in plastic bottles now. And hard on your back, getting them into that water stand! Get a pitcher and some filters. When the filter is done, I slice it open and put the charcoal out into my garden. Then I recycle the plastic part. (Who knows where the plastic goes, but we do what we can do.)

Mountain Spring has always been my favorite. Their water comes from up near Painted Cave. You can't get much more local than that. RO is good but I really would change the filters more often than every year or two.

Anyone have more to say about how their preferred water tastes? I'm willing to bear some cost if the water truly tastes fresh and clean.

OP here: thanks for all the actually helpful answers. And a big pfffffft tho those of you that comment to be snarky. I would love an under sink system. Cant afford to plunk down for reverse osmosis it sounds like. I am open to a costco style filter.. But not sure how to deal with the softener. Our water(yep, I have pipes too! woo hoo) is so bad it leaves white crust on all dishes and clothing that we wash. I'm tired of putting that in my body. I have used plenty of Britas over the years. The pitcher kind. Wont fit in my fridge and when I leave in on the counter it gets algae in it. Hence, the search for a better solution. I am also not into buying a lot of wasteful materials.

Thanks for all the info! Right now we have the long pipe version and it's horrible. I'm afraid I got used to NYC water, delicious and straight out of the long pipes, and they even have water tasting contests. Many options to choose, thanks again.

If you're in SB, you should know that hexavalent chromium has been detected in the water. It's a really harmful chemical that can only be removed by RO. I've had a carbon under-sink filter for years but am switching to RO. You can buy them direct from the mfr and pay someone to install. Your health is worth the cost.
