DOG OF THE WEEK

Meet Bernie and Georgia
updated: Aug 25, 2012, 9:00 AM

We welcome to our family Bernie and Georgia! These wonderful cuddle muffins were adopted as littler mates from DAWG in June when they were 9 weeks old. We were only planning to get only one but my husband said it would be better if we got two (two cute balls of fluff? who's to argue with that?). It's been quite the ride! I have never had puppies (though my husband has) so it's been an amazing experience. A few trials and tribulations along the way but a fantastic addition to our family. We love them so much. Bernie is the boy version (he's the brunette) and Georgia is the girl version (she's the blonde). Bernie, or Bernstein, is like a Jewish grandfather reincarnate. When we first got him I thought he was aging backwards! But he has grown into something pretty cute. But he still looks like an old dog. They are very loving and affectionate. They love laps and cuddling with us on the couch. Their favorite game as of late is "let's see how long it takes to piss off the cat" but the resident cat keeps coming back for more! They chase each other down the hallway and when the cat realizes we're watching she stops and acts as if she wasn't playing with them. Jezebel (resident cat) is coming along nicely. But it's been a slow road. They love kids and any attention they can get. Georgia is more adventurous than Bernie. If a big dog in the neighborhood barks at them Bernie runs inside and hides behind the coffee table. Georgia runs towards then fence saying, "bring it!". Bernie get's car sick, (not all dogs love trucks). They are very smart and I think they will do well with agility training. DAWG says they are doxie/spaniel mix but I'm starting to think that mama met up with a Great Dane somewhere along the way because Bernie is growing at twice a rate as Georgia. He is twice her size and they are form the same litter. I definitely recommend to anyone who gets puppies.. get two! Not only are they so much more entertaining to watch and play with, but it's so much easier because they can entertain each other, chew on each other, keep each other company while being crate trained. And house training two really isn't any harder than house training one because if you feed them together, they poop together (syncropooping!) Anyhow, I love them so much and can't wait to see what other wonderful pleasures they bring into our lives and home.

On Sunday August 26, C.A.R.E.4Paws is hosting its fourth annual Wags n' Whiskers Festival at Girsh Park in Goleta from 11am to 4pm. The event—the largest adoption festival in Santa Barbara County—features adoptable dogs, cats and bunnies from more than 20 animal shelters and rescue groups and showcases a wide range of local pet service providers and animal welfare groups. In previous years, the festival has inspired 30-plus dog, cat and bunny adoptions. For a list of events, sponsors, and participating groups, Google care4paws.org/wagsnwhiskers.
