Sunday Beach Show
updated: Aug 19, 2012, 10:31 AM

By Edhat Subscriber

Does anyone know how well the vendors along East beach fare on Sundays, i.e. space fees vs. sales/profits? I'm considering the possibility of testing the waters by selling my framed photographs and joining that elite group of artists ...

Go to the City of S.B. web site. It has particulars of who to call for more info about criteria.

Oy! been there, done that.

Be prepared for window damage-- things getting blown down, things "walking away" , and general out and out tiredness and burn out from the packing the car, unpacking, repacking and unpacking at home again. All in all the things get handled four times each show and we "lost" alot of things to damage.
We decided after about 9 months of shows to pull the plug-- just too exhausting. Between the packing, setting up, the show itself, repacking and unpacking at home-- it was about a 12 hour day. On our best day that came out to $15/h...divided by two for my husband and myself. So we made 7.5/hr. Is that even minimum wage is CA?

Good Luck if you decide to do it, just be prepared.
We always thought it looked like fun....it was a lot of hard work.

Be prepared for people to photograph your photographs as though they are entitled to do that. Why should they purchase your photo when they can copy it?
I've been photographer in the show for a long time. It was really good to be a photographer there before digital cameras.

My advice would be to apply for a permit for the special weekend shows (holidays, a few times a year) and try it out before you commit to an entire year (which is how at least they used to do it.) You can't miss a weekend or you get penalized and its' really a hassle if you ever have an emergency and can't have anyone cover your spot for you. They used to make it so that you couldn't even have someone sub for you, YOU had to be there. It may have changed, but you're right to check into it and give it some thought before signing on the dotted line.

There is no special permit for holiday shows. Beginners can get a 6 month permit.

Perhaps try some of the other non profit fundraiser type craft and art sales...they tend to be well attended with an audience a bit more dedicated to making a purchase (becasue they are fundraisers). That way you could pick and chose your time and event. They will still be those 12 hour days though. Shows can be fun, busy, boring, frustrating...be prepared as you will be dealing with "the public" in all its forms, pleasant and ugly.

Call Laura Condon at 805-560-7557 to learn more about eligibility criteria and the application process. She is the contact person for the show at city parks and recreation dept.

I have been in the show for over 25 years and do well enough to keep selling there. If you have a good product and the right attitude you can do well.

It is work, not a place to go hang out and have fun. If you enjoy what you do then it is fun work!

It should cost just under $300 to get an initial permit to sell for 6 months. Currently there is room for new members in the show.

Each artist or crafts person is required to be present and sell only there own work.

Spaces are assigned based on attendance so the only penalty for not showing every Sunday is you may not have an assigned space in a desirable spot.

The income potential versus cost of show is great, but some days are slow while other days are great.

0212P..... really? Their digital snap will be as good as the orginal? You either undervalue your work/craft or overate the autonomous capacity of a dumb electronic gadget.
