August 19, 2012 - Tastes Like Chicken

This week we got not one reminder, but two reminders that our world-full-of-wonder is not as safe as we'd like to think it is. Our wakeup call this week came in the form of a shark; a great white one like in the movie. The threat also brought another moral meditation to the surface. The shark is another one of nature's great creations. Should we fear it? Kill it? Lock it up? Or eat it in a taco? Or should we love and cuddle it like a puppy or an injured bird?

What's a Santa Barbarian to do?

We've all heard it a million times; that bees kill more people than sharks do. But that doesn't change the fact that they, to quote a local, recently wed comedian, have big pointy teeth. And they take huge bites from surfboards that then wash silently to shore.

So we hope you have a good Santa Barbara Sunday and for Dog's sake, stay out of the water!

Speaking of the world full of wonder, we were wondering if the word "thereunder" would be allowed in Words for Friends, and if Ask Edda covered that important question in her column this week about a similar topic.
The Dog of the Week this week is Milo, the ranch dog. The Cat of the Week is Chub Chub, who worships the sun. Nicole explains the personalities of numbers; the Urban Hikers wrap up their coastal trek with a glimpse at Eucalyptus Lane then and now, the Miramar Hotel. The Non-Profit of the Week is Meals-on-Wheels, dedicated to enhancing the lives of senior, disabled, and/or homebound residents of Santa Barbara, and Edda offers advice to a reader who loves to play Words with Friends.

---- Edhat Stuff ----------------------------------

Awesome or Awful? You make the call.

ASK EDDA: I am a big fan of the online game of Words with Friends. I have it on my I-phone and like to play it with my friends and family.

WHERE IS IT?: We posted a photo. You guessed where it was. Are you the winner?

Lauren: Did you see the Beatles cover band in the park?

NON-PROFIT OF THE WEEK: Santa Barbara Meals on Wheels is an independent volunteer-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of senior, disabled, and/or homebound residents of Santa Barbara.

Nicole: Have you ever thought of numbers as people? Nicole has and she's explaining why she loves the number 12, but 10 is a jerk.

URBAN HIKE: The Urban Hikers wrap up their coastal trek with a glimpse at Eucalyptus Lane then and now, the Miramar Hotel and the legendary Grover Cleveland Barnes.

DOG OF THE WEEK: Meet Milo, the easygoing ranch dog.

CAT OF THE WEEK: Meet Chub Chub, the lazy cat who loves sleeping in the sunshine.
