DUI Checkpoint Results

‘AVOID the 12' conducted a sobriety and driver's license checkpoint on Friday, August 17th and
Saturday August 18th between 8:00pm and 3:00am in the 400 block of Chapala Street in the City of
Santa Barbara. This operation was one of 33 DUI enforcement operations that will be conducted
throughout Santa Barbara County during the 17 Day Summer Mobilization Period which runs from Friday
August 17th through Monday September 3rd. Officers from the Lompoc, Santa Barbara and UCSB Police
Departments worked along side deputies from the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Office to staff the sobriety
checkpoint. Here are the results of the checkpoint:
Vehicles Screened: 1,203
DUI Arrests: 5
Driving Without a Valid Driver's License: 8
Driving with a suspended driver's license: 2
Vehicles Impounded for 30 days: 3
Vehicles Impounded for 1 day: 5
Miscellaneous citations: 7
Julie Harrington-Giffin (07-20-67) of Laguna Niguel was arrested for DUI.
Arber Nasi (03-12-85) of Santa Barbara was arrested for DUI.
Scott Edward Perry (04-18-56) of Goleta was arrested for DUI
Peter Torrez (11-30-87) of Carpinteria was arrested for DUI.
The national "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" crackdown is led by the California Office of Traffic Safety
(OTS), with the California Avoid DUI Task Force Campaign combining high-visibility enforcement and
heightened public awareness and impaired driving deterrence through publicity.
‘AVOID the 12' is named for the 12 Law Enforcement agencies within Santa Barbara County that work
together to combat DUI driving.

found at www.californiaavoid.org. Statistical data on the number of DUI arrests and DUI fatal crashes
will be released periodically throughout the holiday weekend.
Funding for ‘AVOID the 12' comes from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National
Highway Transportation Safety Administration who reminds everyone to Report Drunk Driving - Call 9-
