Mesa Towers
updated: Aug 15, 2012, 11:21 AM

By Edhat Subscriber

I live on the Mesa. Many years ago (at last 15 or more), we were asked to consent to a single phone tower to be built on top of the hill near Dolores Street and La Coronilla Drive. As I remember, it was to be one tower, with the possibility of a second tower later on, that being the maximum. Since that time, there have been many more towers added, as well as sturdy concrete outbuildings, and a paved road. There are trucks and people up there frequently. Does anyone know 1) what company is using this land, 2) who owns the land, and 3) why they have not had to get additional permission from the neighborhoods for increasing the development? Thanks!

Nimby's want it both ways. Perfect cell phone service but no other natural consequences.

569: I think your comment is unreasonable (or trolling - same thing, really). The OP isn't a NIMBY - the neighborhood agreed to a tower in their backyard (even two towers). But they are now concerned as more are being built than what was originally planned. NOT a NIMBY attitude. They were perfectly fine with cell towers in their area. Just not a few dozen of them.

588: I totally agree. 569 was really eager to get on here first and do a little name-calling. Not cool. OP was just trying to find out with whom she could take this further, wasn't really even complaining on here, just explaining why she is concerned. As would we all be, in her situation.

595... I disagree with your assessment. Language such as "why they have not had to get additional permission from the neighborhoods for increasing the development?" seems to support 569's view. Consent and permission from neighbours strongly infers disapproval of "trucks and people up there frequently". But that's my opinion, or the meaning I got from the post.... obviously everyone's mileage will vary.

Since when do neighbors have the final say in such construction?

Answer: Never did, never will.

You are asking a lot of questions for someone who lives close, knows how many towers are there, watches the coming and goings of traffic, witness to a pave rd.....Hello why don't you ask them? How do you know they have built all these things without consent? Once the tower is there, all they can do is add to it and make it bigger and better.

SB City Planning & Development would know and have on file for public requests, the answers to your three questions; 630 Garden Street.

When neighbors, (one presumes they are property owners with a genuine, legitimate stake in the quality and character of their neighborhood) are asked, and graciously give their consent to allow disruptive excavation and construction, (of cel phone towers in this case), why do those with NO stake in the neighborhood see a reason to comment adversely when the earlier (and conditional) approval is abused, and the phone companies take liberties that far exceed the original neighbors' approval?

I think those taking this "holier-than-thou" attitude are the real NIMBY's, only too glad, (and smirking) that they don't have this going on in their own immediate neighborhoods.

Isn't that the site for the city police and fire transmitters?

117 How do you know that these companies are taking liberties?
Disruptive excavation and construction? who said "they" are the same company. Why do you assume this approval is abused?
You seem to know a lot, but not really any factual information. I would love to hear the truth as to what is going on, and would love to see you do something about it. power to the people.
