I just moved to Santa Barbara and I hear a lot about the Funk Zone. Where is it exactly and why is it named
that?

Welcome to SB, OP. Where do you hail from? There is a web site dedicated to the funk zone. I am not allowed by Edhat to post the URL for it, but if you Google "Funk Zone Santa Barbara" you'll get all the info you need.

What's interesting is that guy who owns all the property on the west side of Kimberly Ave. (the other side of Mason)has the last name Funke. I havent done any research, but I guess that he may have owned more property down there...and people would call it the Funke zone. Wild guess.

Just pop over to the left hand column. Click "Urban Hike" and scroll down. There are two episodes about the Funk Zone. Or you can search the site here using "The Funk Zone". That will get you to the first funk zone story.

It's called "The Funk Zone" because "abandoned warehouse district" doesn't exactly fit with with Santa Barbara's marketing message.

it's where all the cool kids and Santa Barbara hipsters go wine-tasting! It's by the train tracks down at the end of downtown State St. but it's really fun. There's hardly any tourists and you can always spot the local rock band members that are off-duty and doing some wine-tasting on a Sunday afternoon. this is not your hoity-toity wine-tasting area. wear your flip flops, sunglasses and proudly bear your tattoos while you sip locally made wine, champagne and sometimes beer. Please don't tell your parent about this. LOL

lots of art studios and surfboard shaping going on in the funk zone too. it's the area of town that isn't quite as culturally sterilized as our typical tourist locations.

If and when something ever gets built in the La Entrada black hole, I hope it coexists and enhances the funk zone rather than clashes with it. This area, so close to the waterfront, has TONS of potential.

Come down on October 6th and find out for yourself. There will be open studio tours, hands on art making and demonstrations, music, food and wine. A Taste of the Funk Zone is part of Epicure SB, a celebration of culinary delights. It's not abandoned at all! There are over 50 creatives in a ten block area including lots of public art (AMASS Gallery). As the day rolls on it will be more for adults and will be a great party into the night. Mark your calendars! Should be a blast, many people are working on this. The Creative Class rises!

The Funk Zone is awesome, but with all the attention its been getting lately (& the new upper scale wineries) it will soon be Disneyfied, um, I mean Santa-Barbara-ized to death. Prices will go up, artists will move out. So sad.

Also called the Funk Zone because of its proximity to the wastewater treatment plant between Garden and Salsipuedes--with the right wind conditions, the aroma in the area can get pretty "Funky", hence the Funk Zone.
