Sorority Badge Repair
updated: Aug 14, 2012, 1:20 PM

Question - where would one go to have a piece of non solid gold jewelry repaired. I have an old, very delicate sorority badge that I took to Bryant and Sons and they scoffed at me for even thinking they would repair such a thing. I understand it's because their equipment would not work in this case. I had no idea it was not real gold, but it has sentimental value and I'd like to have it fixed. Any ideas on where I might have it repaired?

Maybe a smaller jewelry store, like Patco? Or, you might try contacting your national organization and asking if they provide such a service or can make a referral (maybe the company that makes their jewelry will do repairs). The sorority probably has a web page where you could find the contact information. Good luck!

there's a very friendly (and good) jeweler on De La Vina:

Bill Flowers Jeweler
1333 De La Vina St # D Santa Barbara, CA 93101
(805) 884-1994

He keeps weird hours so I'd call first.

When I was looking at rings with my now wife, Bryant and Sons told us that the size of the diamond I got her would reflect how much I loved her. Needless to say we both walked out in disgust and never returned. I had to restrain my wife from slapping the guy.

The jeweler in Old Town Goleta (I don't know the store name) does repairs all the time, and has a superb reputation. He was recommended to me by an instructor for GIA (Gemnological Institute of America.)

I'd take it to Patco, they have fixed lots of things for me.

And 151--I've heard the saying goes "the smaller the diamond the longer the love."

I would take it to Patco. Pat understands sentimental value and has fixed things for me that others have said were not fixable or not worth fixing. Really nice people and very very honest. I don't go anyplace else anymore.

I took my Bulova Accutron to Bryant for a new battery several years ago. The concierge (I'm sure they're not referred to as salespeople at Bryant) haughtily told me (with a slight curl of his upper lip--or maybe I only imagined that part) words to the effect of, "Oh, we don't SERVICE those here." He then turned and walked away before I could even reply. I didn't want service, I just wanted a frickin' battery. Now that I can actually afford to shop there, I never would.

yet another vote for Pat at Patco at 316 E Haley; 962.7200. My friend trusted him to work on a huge diamond ring she inherited and I have also trusted him with inherited (albeit much smaller) diamonds. He does great work at matching old to new settings and his prices are reasonable.
