Where did Edhat travelers visit this past four months? What was it like? As a mostly armchair traveler these days, it's good to gain perspective of where people have visited lately.

We spent a few days in Sonoma and Healdsburg. Beautiful, friendly towns with good wine, food and shopping!

San Francisco, Minneapolis, and Philadelphia / Jersey Shore, all in the past month. We were unbelievably fortunate to get perfect weather in all three vacation spots. Ocean temp in NJ was high 70's and the waves were awesome. On the whole, people don't come much nicer than in Minnesota. Really enjoyed spending time in SF being able to get anywhere rapidly by public transit.

Maui in May. Hot and windy but well worth the trip, beautiful beaches, and georgeous sunrises and sunsets.

Maui in the Kahana area which is quite a bit cooler than south Maui. Stayed in a very quiet low rise condo called Kahana Reef in a 4th floor unit found on VRBO. Woke up to glorious sunrises and breathtaking views of Molokai and Lanai. The best part was being only 25ft from the ocean and hearing the waves at night and staying within budget by being able to cook our own meals once in awhile.

The flowering trees this time of year are spectacular in all colors from bright orange to pale pinks and yellows and the fragrance of the plumeria and gardenias fills the air. Loved it!

New York. Fun, but awfully hot. Sacramento, not fun, but also hot.

The delight is in the details. Where in Colorado? What was especially beautiful? What aspects of NYC were fun? Didn't the teachers of yore have a nanny attitude and have a minimum length for responses?

Portobelo, Panama. It was very hot and humid; Portobelo has the highest rainfall of anywhere on the north American continent: about 240" per year; I think most of it fell while I was there ! Sir Francis Drake is said to have died of dysentery while at anchor off Portobelo. He was, supposedly, buried at sea in a lead coffin which has never been found. Diver still look for it. The town has some interesting ruins of Spanish colonial fortifications; it has come under on numerous occasions, notably in 1668 when Henry Morgan held it under siege for two weeks. Portobelo is now a jumping-off point for back-backers and sailors heading to the San Blas Islands.

France in late April and early May.
Visited Paris for eight days, then eight more in Aix en Provence, Carcassonne and the Dordogne. It was wonderful.
We really loved the Dordogne and didn't have enough time there. I recommend careful planning for that area to make sure you get in to see the prehistoric cave paintings. In Paris, we tried out the "Velib" bicycle rental system as an alternative to the Metro.
We have a great time.

Denver and north of there in Fort Collins and surrounding countryside. The air was clean, water was clear and tastes amazing and the people are so friendly. What is particularly gorgeous is the colors, you can drive down the street and the trees and plants are every shade of glorious, healthy green. Went in March and again in June. March was better, a big fire broke out while we were there for the June trip but it is still gorgeous there, lakes, rivers and ponds all over the place :)

Got lucky along BOTH WA and OR coasts! Clear sunny weather all the way. Didn't realize how far the forested mountainous area reaches, because I'd never seen it on a clear day.
This was in early July.

We spend our vacations here in beautiful Santa Barbara, the jewel of the West Coast. Unable to afford trips to exotic sounding places we look at our home town of 50 years through the eyes of a couple of tourists. We have a great time. We eat out every day and make side trips to Solvang, Santa Inez and further up the coast. It's always good to get home to our comfortable bed and a good sleep before setting off for another fun day.

Phoenix and Tucson. Nice desert scenery, but hot and humid. When we got back to SBA (70), it was 43 degrees cooler than Phoenix (113).

Flew to Florida and picked up a cruise ship. Cruised across the Atlantic for a week. Spent a day at the following places: Canary Islands, Cadiz, Malaga, Valencia, and then 4 nights in Barcelona. Great trip!

I spent a week in Colorado Springs chaperoning a group of swimmers training at the Olympic Training Center. It was inspiring to live amongst the athletes, many of whom were heading to London for the Olympics. Our kids from SB got to see that the other athletes were not that different from themselves, and that anything is possible....it was a great experience. CS is a beautiful town with lots to do and see, especially if you like outdoor activities and nature.

At present we are heading to Mt. Rainier and continuing our long road trip from Santa Barbara to British Columbia and back home. We traveled up the coast through Calif, Oregon and Washington States and ferried over to Victoria BC and on to the Pacific Rim NP on the west coast of Vancouver Island BC. Photographed humpback whales in Barkley Sound. Stopped off in Vancouver to get a city fix and now southward to the Cascades and down through Central Oregon before bombing back to paradise! Weather has been stellar and scenery has been sublime....life is good.

Yellowstone, Jackson, and the Tetons, the Tetons were the best by far. But it was hot everywhere, 95 to 91 everyday, so glad to be home and not using AC!

A couple of weeks ago I had the Lexus serviced for a road trip. On a slightly foggy but warmish day, I got on the 101 south. I cranked open the sunroof and drove along the Rincon, the radio tuned to KCLU, which featured a really interesting discussion of crop rotation with strawberries and broccoli. Or something. I can't really be sure because I was checking the GPS about where I was actually headed and wasn't paying that much attention.

After driving for what seemed like hours, I eventually came across my coordinate--"Seaward Avenue, 1 1/2 miles." And arising like a golden phoenix--glistening like a jewel in the fog-enshrouded sun--was the magickal land of Ventura!

Exiting the freeway, I then took a few turns and wound up at Thompson and Borchard. And there it was, the place I'd only heard about--Big Lots! (the outlet store formerly known as Pic 'n' Save).

I spent what seemed like hours there. (But according to my watch it was only 35 minutes). I went on a wild spending spree--tinned mackeral for the husky, only $1.29. A DVD of "World's Funniest America's Most Wanted Bloopers"--$1.49. Garden gnomes, a steal at $7.89. A flat-screen 42-inch teevee (Son-hee brand) made in Honduras, $149.99. The bargains never end!

Then it was on to the Montalvo Gentleman's Club for a luncheon of chicken wings. Entertainment was provided by several very nice ladies who performed acrobatics on poles. I'd read about it on Craigslist. What a treat!

After such a hectic day, it was time to return to SB, so at about 1:30 in the afternoon, I came home.

Hey, you don't have to go to Fiesta to have a good time. A trip to Ventura is like a day on the French Riviera.

Only I'll bet they don't have a Big Lots! on the French Riviera.

A week up at Green Valley Lake. My daughter ran the Tough Mudder with her friends at Snow Valley. Green Valley Lake is just before Snow Valley. If you want to get away, do some four wheeling, hiking or fishing it's awesome. Tough Mudder is an incredible experience. It's a race where you help each other out to complete the tough and crazy obstacles of ten miles, up and down the Snow Valley trails. We need more of this in todays world. So glad I was able to experience it with her.

South Africa for 2 weeks, intent was to work with and for the Children of the Cape Flats; they live in one room shacks and have no running water, no electricity that is legal or safe, paved roads but no cars, gangsters and riots. Winter and raining and so cold and I saw flip flops on some, no jacket, hoodie or sweater on others. No jobs but I've never in my life expected to see such happy children. God blesses them each and every day. Speaking to one young man who graduated from an esteemed school (whose intent was on scholarly and Christian instruction) said that despite his academic prowess, he will not leave South Africa or even the townships, they are home. Which is great! Keep the well educated young men and women in the townships and the change will come from within, no sense waiting for a government (excl Mandela) to effect any changes. It was beautiful and heart rending to witness and bring home with me. I can't wait to get back there.

Sailed the Caribbean. Great food and a fantastic beach and diving at St. John's, but the abject poverty on the islands was depressing.

Visited Southern Utah. Based out of Cedar City. Toured the University of Southern Utah (SUU), beautiful campus. Hit Zion National Park, then Bryce, then Cedar Breaks. Then the Grand Canyon out of St. George and on to Lake Powell. A great summer vacation.

Northern Idaho in June, beautiful, green, trout fishing and rain every other day. I would move there if I won the lottery except for their winters, ugh. Portland Oregon late June...Fabulous Japanese Garden in the center of town! Rose Garden that's fragrant from blocks away! Glimpses of Portlandia, "Keep Portland Wierd" signs, and rain! Evidence of inteligent life everywhere.
