UFO Sighting?
updated: Aug 11, 2012, 9:40 AM

By Edhat Subscriber

8/10/12 Approximately 8:30 pm on the Mesa near the Lighthouse.

While sitting in our spa without anything to smoke or drink, my husband and I both saw 3 rather large orange lights moving across the sky from northwest to southeast. This is not a usual flight path. The lights were larger than a plane, lower, unblinking, easily visiable and emitted no sound at all. As they slowly passed almost above us, we heard nothing. They were in a 3 point formation. As they passed, we saw from behind they emitted a lighter spray of orange on either side that looked like butterfly wings. The strong orange color of the leader noiselessly faded gently into the atmosphere until it disappeared. The remaining two others both had the same lighter orange wing spray, dimmed and faded into nothingness as well.

Did anyone see them or know what they were?

Another subscriber also witnessed something interesting:

Did anyone else see the three lights moving across the sky over Santa Barbara at about 8:30 pm, Friday night? They were quite bright, with a steady light, not flashing like airplane wing lights. They stayed close together as they traveled, then a few minutes later faded away one by one.

No, but I wish I had. It sounds beautiful.

This sounds very similar to what my housemate and another friend saw (simultaneously and independently) about 3 months ago in the Summerland area. The incident happened at the same time time of the evening and the flight path was the same, from NW to SE, and out over the ocean. Both witnesses were fascinated and talked about the incident at length, and both of their accounts corroborated in all the main details. I hasten to add that the two witnesses neither drink alcohol nor take drugs.

A friend and I on the Mesa saw the same thing - I took a video of part of it on my phone.

My theory is 3 rockets were launched from a submarine.

With Vandenburg so closeby they test many types of rockets and other things that fly.....

Too bad there are no pictures!

My wife and I, that nite that time also saw it. We didn't stay to watch because we figured it was a constellation. But looking back on it now, never saw that constellation before or since your sighting. I agree what you experienced, is more than likely true.

The Poster: These lights were a little north of us so not over the ocean at this point of their travel. They were beautiful, but spooky.

My neighbors across the street pointed them out as they ascended from the Mesa Lane beach area. They seemed to be just floating lumenarias. I even joked that there would be ufo posts today. They followed the breeze and went out. Did look really cool though.

Be nice if they were armed drones looking for the Panga crowd.

My guess is what you saw were satellites in low orbit. Why they were so close I don't know - could be military...

Saw them. Also saw a bunch of the same on the 4th before the fireworks display. As JEFFINSB stated, they're just floating lumenarias...

Unidentified Submersible Objects (USO's) have regularly been visiting the Channel Islands since 1937.

My boyfriend and I saw the moving lights as well. Silent and oh so beautiful. Fascinating!

I saw them too. I thought I saw small blinking lights, so I assumed they were helicopters.

I saw the same thing. i live on a golf course where is dark and often I look up and around to see whats going on. On the night of the 10th I saw 3 bright lights in a perfect equalateral triangle formation all spaced prefectly apart. I have never seen any stars sitting like that. I thought maybe they were something but I dismissed it as well just a coincidence. But seeing this on Edhat and reading others siteings it more or less confirms someting strange was out there. "they" are here.

my friend and I wer drinking a beer in the back yard bellow sky line cr when i first noticed a red orb type of light rising from mesa lane area i thought it was a helicopter at first and commented on the fact it had no running lights then two more rose after. turned and headed for Montacito slowly drifting and making random patterns.ware the lights went out.I don't believe in ghost ore space ships and this is the first time i have seen something of this nature. my best explanation it was a hoax created by helleam ballunes with leds lights strung together following the wind currents or drones but not likely

If it was an object, was flying, and is unidentified, then it's a UFO.

I bet the alien visitors would love some good Santa Maria Tri Tip.
