Does anyone know what they are building on the 101 Southbound Mission
offramp? The've closed the exit since June 20th, M-Th, very little progress
is happening. When is the expected completion date?

Just back from a business trip to Washington and while there visited a Santa Barbaran who has lived there for four years. He commented on how quickly and efficiently people in public service worked up there. They use the light of the summer months and have two crews, one that starts at 6 AM and is off at 2 or 3, and another that starts at noon and works until 8-9. They use all the daylight hours, pay no overtime, and they just get it done! Granted, they don't have that long light luxury in the winter, (neither do we) but that's an idea that could be used here in CA during the summers... Might be able to employ lots of students who need summer jobs.

As a SB Highlands resident and daily user of the NB 101 Carrillo onramp, I cannot wait for this project's completion. So many people get off at Carrillo to U-turn back to Mission, crowding the left-turn lane for the NB 101 onramp that eastbound traffic on Carrillo backs up ridiculously far waiting for precious spots to open in the onramp's left-turn lane. I have noticed that they have slightly changed the light pattern to accomodate for the increased traffic, but it is still quite frustrating. I need to put a yellow sticky on my dash that reminds me to head across the westside and get on the NB 101 at Mission. You think people have a problem figuring out how to drive in a roundabout? My pet peeve is people who don't know how NOT to block an intersection.

caltrans supervises this job. A private contractor bid the job and was the low bid. When you see people standing around, It makes no difference. The contractor still gets the same amount even if its at a loss. When you actually SEE Caltrans workers working on the freeway, that is composed of caltrans workers. Not a bid job. highway 192 sink hole....caltrans supervises this because it is a highway but the actual work is by a private contractor.

Can't resist responding: The Neo-Conservative vision for the United States, as put forth in The Project for the New American Century is US domination of the world. An American Empire. The primary push in this vision is the military domination of all other countries so that their ideals will be imposed on every other nation. Is this the sort of group advocacy of dominance that you speak of?

RHS Despite the fact we are now in the 21st century there are still countries and forces in the world that see themselves and their views as dominant and wish to impose them on others, like us very tolerant Americans. There are still others who are jealous over the fact, that despite existing poverty and other conditions in this country the vast majority of Amercians enjoy a better than average standard of living and are able to excercize free speech, freedom of religion, freedom to travel, etc. The reason we still have all these things (and more) are because of the hundreds of millions we spend on an up to date military that preserves and protects our country, our freedoms and our life style! Despite your views it is more than a good investment.

The most dismal and wasteful use of the greatest share of our tax money is to pay private contractors for producing war material and weaponry to do devastation to the rest of the world. We spend almost as much as the rest of the world combined in military purchases. Huge profits are made from this by military contractors and sub-constractors (not the soldiers and sailors, by the way). The money spent on public works at least gets spent at home and by middle class working folks.

891, that one actually made me laugh out LOUD. And you are spot on. HA HA HAHA! Nothing mean about that comment. I'd LOVE to see what our tax money actually goes to and how much. We'd all be astonished.

While Caltrans is in the area, I hope they pick up the trash that lines the medians and along the roadsides from Los Positas northbound on ramp. Why is that area always so trashy? Why is the 101 through Santa Barbara one of the trashiest in the State? Crews come in for other jobs and the trash just sits there. Thank goodness for the Adopt a Highway volunteers. But they just can't keep up with all the litter that accumulates. Come on, Caltrans, give SB equal attention.

Oh, now some of these have got nasty. You who are bashing Caltrans must never have driven the 101 through town before they resurfaced it. I'm just glad to see folks employed...

I saw the men haking the trees 2 worked while the other 10 stood there. That's what really happened. I don't think they know to trim a tree or bush. Nor do they clean up the cutting very well and the sides of the road looked trashed. You can see they work near Fairview and Los Canaros that they did a few weeks ago. Looks worse now.

I've noticed that the CalTrans landscape maintenance crews on 101 now include a CalFire truck. Why? There seem to be no shortage of ways that the bureaucrats can spend our money.

It is the mission pump station. Replacement, out with the old in with the new. This has been stated before on edhat. People who are not in the construction field tend to think oh construction is screwing traffic up. Well this pump station keeps the ground water from coming up. Have you seen the water on castillo st underpass? Guess what? It is below the water table and the water has to go somewhere. If that pump station was to fail you would be floating as if you were in a creek.

I frequently use the Mission off-ramp. I am always thankful that they have an electric sign prior to Las Positas as a reminder that Mission is closed. From the underpass level it looks like they are building a big concrete box. Perhaps it is a reinforcement to the overpass.

014, thank you! I've had several instances where I am stuck in a massive traffic jam on the freeway because a lane is closed for road work only to get to the "roadwork" and there be men standing around leaning on shovels talking. Our taxes pay their salaries, the goal should be to get work done as efficiently as possible. Anything government employee is the opposite.

How many accidents have there been? trying to exit on Carrillo is dangerous. I would like to know when they are going to open it again. I find it incredibly annoying. why don't they do it at night, so they don't cause so many accidents?

They are probably just trimming the landscaping, with scissors, and since they only have one $500,000 pair they have to take turns... one person trims while the other 8 watch. Gotta make sure that we think our hard earned taxes are getting used correctly!
