I am one street over and heard the pops. Didn't think about it being gunshots. How sure are we that it was reports from a firearm?

I assumed it was fireworks, but the last time I made that assumption it turned out to be gunshots.

There was a report near Ellwood of 3 shots around that time.

Why do people constantly "assume" that the pops they hear are fireworks? Guns are much more common, and much easier to obtain. There are 90 guns for every 100 people in the USA. When you hear a pop, you should assume it's a gunshot, because odds are, it is.

I assume fireworks because we've had families in our neighborhood with a penchant for fireworks. Also, I'd rather think the neighbors are using fireworks than guns.

I hear these 'pops' in my neighborhood every once in a while. I ussualy just ignore them. But if ever a bullet goes whizing by me that will change real fast.

I heard those last night in the Ellwood area.

@862...your rhetoric is laughable. Even if your stats are right, when you account for collectors, dealers, etc, odds are more likely none of your adjacent neighbors own a gun while every kid you see likely has pop caps, fireworks or even a paint gun.

907: You're completely fooling yourself. It's way harder for kids to obtain fireworks than it is for anyone to obtain a gun. And once you account for all the people who cannot own guns (minors, convicted felons, mentally ill) the chances of your neighbor owning a gun start to skyrocket.

Don't expect any of the local news sources to tell you the truth about gunshots in your neighborhood. Just Ask Roger.

Anyone can buy a gun at a gun show.... minors, felons, mental cases. The only paperwork is a bill of sale for sales tax (maybe).

6907... parse it anyway you want but there are more (irresponsible) folks with guns running around than folks with fireworks.

Under California law, every firearm sale, including those between private sellers, is subject to a background check conducted by a licensed dealer and the sale is also subject to the state's 10-day waiting period. The seller must wait for the full term of the waiting period to elapse before the weapon can be transferred to the buyer.

Ok, 306862, you seem to be assuming that gun ownership == shooting guns in your backyard. There is not a direct equivalence.

We have two sets of steak knives at home. We probably have twice as many knives as other people. This does not equate to us being twice as likely to stab people!

Fireworks ownership, and warm summer nights, do usually mean the occasional bored teenager setting off fireworks, hopefully with adult supervision.

Guns may be more prevailant than fireworks. But this does not mean the guns get used more than the fireworks. MOST people who legally purchase guns do so for defense and hope to never use it.

In the absence of hearing screaming before and after the gunshots, and the absence of hearing sirens, I'm betting it was just fireworks. Anyone living close enough to the action would hopefully be able to see/hear the difference, maybe also hearing playful yells of children vs. panicked screams of victims.

934 - Gun shows must follow all standard state laws in California - which is a background check and 10 day wait on all handguns and modern long guns.

were there any bullet holes or shell casings that correspond to this report? when i lived in oakland i would often find empty casings on the ground. aside from gunshot victims there's no other way to verify whether it was a gunshot or just someone who ate at freebirds for dinner.

I hear gunshots almost daily on the Westside...Just how it is no media coverage.
