Get your pickup truck, back it in the driveway and put a tarp in the bed. Fill with water ....Ta Da! kids will love it.

We had one of those ones with the sheet metal walls and a liner sitting inside. Couldn't tell you what brand it was, but I do have some advice - when you cover it for the winter (if you do...they get really cold in the winter anyway) LEAVE THE WATER IN IT. We ruined a liner one year because we took the water out and it shrunk up, then when we refilled it, it ripped. Those things are expensive to replace!

Before that, we had one of the giant blow up kinds, looked kind of like a big donut. It was cool as a kid because we could lay out on the sides of the pool and not get wet, but my dad had a hell of a time constantly patching holes in the thing.

Depending on where you live, the governmental rules might differ. Always prudent to talk to the planning and building department prior to shelling out any money (assuming you are talking about a Doughboy-type pool and not an inflatable one)...
