Pest Control
updated: Aug 07, 2012, 3:33 PM
Has anyone used a pest control company in Santa Barbara that uses orange oil or
some other non-toxic method (not tenting a house) for termites? And do you
recommend them?
We had our house tented eight or ten years ago and I swore that I would never go
through that again. Thank you for suggestions.

Not based in SB but will work here using Tim-Bor and Termidor (largely borax) is Rick Bradley Structural Pest Control: we thought Rick did an excellent job.

How serious are you about pest control? You need something that is toxic to the termites. It will definitely take a few hours to move foodstuffs to a safe location. If you can't do the work there are people who will work for you.

Vikane (sulfuryl flouride) is the poison used in tenting. I am glad to see that someone else is smart about not using this poison to kill termites (and poison the environs). My neighbors have the largest mansion near downtown SB, and tented their house. I could swear I felt the poison over at my house, I could feel it on my lips and taste it. Such a bad thing for all concerned. I don't understand why everyone is so accepting of this method of killing termites. Must be better alternatives. BTW "Termidor" is an insecticide. And borax is not boric acid, big difference. There is a good product called "Termite-Prufe," sold at Ace Hardware. But that is for spraying localized outbreaks. It is supposed to be "green." Good luck with your search in finding greener method. Post later and let us know how it worked out for you, okay?

I used Escalera 15 years ago and they used an electrical contraption. Don't know if they still use it but it worked .... never had a termite problem except in one small spot in the garage.

A house we rented in Ventura was tented in 2004. Four years later in 2008 my mom opened some boxes and could smell the gas that had obviously been trapped in them.

Google Arbico. They sell nematodes that you spray on the soil to kill ants and termites.

I love Arbico.com. But i think the nematodes are for subterrainian termites. Ive gotten great results using nematodes to rid ants & fleas in the yard. Gone for years.

Pacific Coast Termite (888-500-7224) uses orange oil and other non toxic methods. Nice to work with. Always hard to know how effective, but they will come back and inspect and re-treat any new areas on an annual basis.

For non-toxic applications, that work, call Pac-West Termite Control, based in Carpinteria. (805) 637-3060. Ryan is a very nice guy, & he will return if he missed a spot or termites return. One year guarantee, with option to extend. Worth it. Prices negotiable.

Weidl Construction has a preventive substance they paint onto any vulnerable wood areas -- the painting can be accompanied by exploring and scraping out, by hand, individual places that might have termites, in a structure. 967-3177.

We had an aggressive infestation last summer. A wooden patio chair disintegrated and the wooden deck developed holes. Ecola has been fantastic. No chemicals, no tenting, localized. They returned for some termites elsewhere, retreating the area, eliminating the termites. So far so good.
