It's sprinkling at my house near DPHS. A friend who lives in Ventura said she was at the harbor there and had to leave because of a thunderstorm!

I first moved to Santa Barbara some 30 years ago in August. I remember my landlord saying, "It's raining today, hmm, we're more like Hawai'i every year."

There's nothing unusual about this. This type of summer system - often linked to the monsoon - with mid atmosphere instability resulting in local showers and the odd thunderstorm happens at least once in most summers. We had another system like this only a few weeks ago, except that one was from the residual moisture left over from an Eastern Pacific tropical system, well to the south.

I looked at the radar image and the cloud pattern (I'm no meteorologist but...) looks totally weird. There are denser cells but still really lightly scattered to the north of us and much less dense cells passing us by and in LA, but almost no rain cells over the ocean. This makes me wonder: is this the kind of pattern that cloud seeding produces? The radar image I saw didn't show the whole Pacific Ocean to get perspective on a tropical storm. Any ideas?

When we moved here 38 years ago in August I had a piano sitting outside on the patio. My neighbor, a CA native, said don't worry, it never rains here in August. Well, at 3 in the morning my husband and I were shoving a piano into the house, because it was raining :-). Does anyone remember the movie Cutter and Bone? We all laughed because they portrayed the fiesta parade in the rain.

4526.... actually this morning's news report (KEYT) said there would a chance of showers and sprinkles in odd places. You must have missed it. It's a narrow monsoonal flow from the south west.... more like hurricane weather.

517, today's rain event is pretty local to this part of S. California. Also, there are no current tropical systems in the Pacific basin. The radar images are a little deceptive - the cloud base is somewhat high (over 10,000ft), much of what doppler is showing is not reaching the ground on account of evaporation. Re. cloud seeding - that program was experimental in the 1960s and AFAIK there is no current program involving cloud seeding. The results of those experiments were inconclusive/ambiguous, in that sometimes clouds and rain were produced, and other times, nothing happened.

@516 wrong! RE: Cloud seeding - there's an undated PDF document if you google "California cloud seeding" that details Santa Barbara's cloud seeding program up to 2005 authored by North American Weather Consultants. Also, Chapter 14 of California's 2005 Water Plan is called "Precipitation Enhancement" ("aka 'cloud seeding'") and also shows a map of the areas where "precipitation enhancement" was ongoing at that time, that includes Santa Barbara County (and Sierra Nevada counties, but no other coastal counties other than SB???). So, yes, we have cloud seeding in SB County and the state-produced information on it is extremely easy to find if anyone cares to look for it.

Aug. 13, 1978 was the earthquake that really shook Goleta (5.5?). I don't remember it because I was on a family vacation at the time out of state.

I know Aug. 13, '78. My first job. I think I woulda been outside the building FAST, but if not, hardware (screws, nuts and bolts in a large metal cabinet) would've fallen on me or at least my desk. I don't believe in earthquake weather. I got the 10-20 drops in July; today the pavement almost got wet! I stood in it. I LOVE rain. The lighting of the patchy clouds during twilight and before moonrise was stunningly beautiful.

Stopped at OSH just before dinner for an item, and when we walked out there was that unique smell of Summer rain. The ground was wet, but it had already dwindled to a few drops. Some really interesting clouds too. SoCA Summer. :)

It was sunny and warm on that August day. But it had been still all day - few birds, my dog was acting skitchy and hiding (very unusual). Yesterdays rain was definitely not EQ weather.

304517 - Absolutely NOT cloud seeding. Simply the result of the monsoonal flow which is very common this time of year. That it happens on Fiesta weekend is coincidental. In my 17 years here this is the first time I can recall it raining during Fiesta.
