Los Dignitarios 2012

I attended Los Dignitarios at the Santa Barbara Zoo last night, which is one of my favorite events every
year! This year was no exception. Great food, good music, and beautiful weather. The highlights from
the food booths this year were the burgers and hot dogs from The Pan (my husband ate 3 burgers!), Ahi
Poke from Marmalade Café, and the tacos from Rincon Catering. I was definitely missing the Crushcakes
this year as they did not have a booth.
Dancing by the Junior and Senior Spirits of Fiesta was fantastic as always. I know there has been a great
deal of controversy surrounding the Junior Spirit(s) this year, but I must admit I enjoyed seeing the two
of them dance together. They seemed to be having fun and they danced beautifully.
I spotted Sherriff Bill Brown, Abel Maldonado, and of course Mayor Helene Schneider enjoying the
festivities. The KEYT news team also had a setup this year broadcasting live from the event.
I really enjoyed some of the crazy "cougars" out in force in ridiculous outfits. Most of the event is held
on grass, so you can spot the first-timers as their heels sink into the lawn and they try not to fall. The
lines in the women's bathroom at the end of the night are always full of comedy. This year I overheard a
conversation between two very intoxicated older ladies (and by older, I mean above 50):
Lady #1:"Are you going to the after party at Shalhoob's? I heard Toad the Wet Sprocket is going to play."
Lady #2 in slurred voice: "No, I can't go. My limo is picking me up in 15 minutes" as she drops her
lipgloss on the bathroom floor and proceeds to pick it up and put it to her lips anyway.
One thing I noticed was the giant sign on the stage that said "LOS DIGNATARIOS" in huge letters. Too
bad it is supposed to be spelled "Los Dignitarios" - with an I, not an A. Some gringo made a big
mistake!
Overall it was a great night. Thanks to all the sponsors, staff, and volunteers who worked hard to put
together such a fantastic local event.
