By Roger the Scanner Guy
A few years back, Belinda's Grand Ma asked me to watch out for her. I said I would, not knowing Grand Ma was on her Death Bed. Ah well people say they will look out for people all the time they never do it. She couldn't really expect me to watch out for her the rest of my life, could she? Belinda was full on Ballistic then drinking everyday raising HELL in the neighborhood and beyond every night. I had just sobered up. It's one thing to watch out for someone when you're both drinking. "Watch Out you're gonna knock over my drink you idiot!" But making that kind of commitment and being sober? Her Grand Ma was dead, some things should not count when you're sober, like promises to watch out for other people whom are not. Belinda had a condo by the beach she usually showed up in the day time we hung out then she would go home at night. One day she was really pounding the drinks, she can really put it away too. Drunks can never seem to agree on anything drunk or sober it's just one of those things. We was having a little disagreement when she just took off, I figured good she was probably headed to the beach outta my hair! I was kicking back had my scanner on relaxing with my Marlboros I wasn't ready to let those go yet. Fire tone went off on the scanner, "Engine 2 Respond to Milpas at the Railroad tracks for train vs bicyclist." "Oh Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!" I jumped up and ran like the wind for those tracks. Several of my friends were about a dozen feet away from the victim. My heart was pounding outta my chest. A couple of them turned and said "It ain't her." A fireman even told me it wasn't her. It took me awhile to calm myself down a bit. "Who was it?" I asked a friend. Over there he motioned. There was a small group of firemen in the center of Milpas in the planter. One was sitting there trying to comfort the victim who was alive but wouldn't be for long. He was talking softly to the victim who was bleeding from the mouth. I was frozen unable to move or look away the man's eyes staring beyond me as he spoke words I couldn't hear. The fireman held the man speaking to him until he passed on. The man was drunk on a bicycle carrying a bottle when he got hit. I had seen him around the neighborhood he wasn't a trouble maker just a drunk, it didn't matter though he coulda been the worse person on Earth seeing him die like that tore me up I cried for hours and hours after that. I haven't seen a lot of death in my time not like these responders who see it every day. But I have seen several people pass away but for some reason this poor fella really got to me and watching the fireman holding him speaking softly to him tore me up too. I could not tell you which fireman it was it doesn't matter though they are all angels with hearts of gold.
Ever since that happened I don't go out when I hear calls like that I get almost uncontrollable tremors. Things were different when I was younger I guess maybe it was because I didn't take life as serious. Every time I hear of a train hitting someone on the tracks I remember that incident. I went out on a code blue call at the beach involving a homeless woman about a week ago because I thought I might know her. I shook all the way there and all the way back. I didn't know the woman still I don't like to see people hurt. As far as watching Belinda she's kinda like my little sister except my little sister is not mean when she gets angry and Belinda she can get quite Ballistic. She's my next door neighbor now sometimes I feel like pulling my hair out. The neighbors get a kick out of it until she starts doing the "War Dance" then everyone hides.
The cats are both my responsibility now Ballistic Belinda has given up Jo Bear I believe that frees me of my cursed commitment also, THANK DOG! Both cats Pooh Bear and Jo Bear do not get along so I might have to find a home for Jo Bear. I don't want to but it's very hard for me to constantly watch both cats. Jo Bear is a good cat loves to eat rats, birds, gophers, lizards, and just about everything else. I don't think he should live in a house with more than one cat he seems to get a little jealous. But one of the cats on the property sorta put him in his place. Still he goes after Pooh Bear who is too old and cannot fight back.
