Tree Grafting
updated: Aug 02, 2012, 6:21 AM

My Pinkerton avocado tree burned to the ground in the Tea fire. It's grown back as a very robust rootstock tree and I would like to find someone who can graft it back to a producing Pinkerton. How does someone find a tree grafter?

Bruce Van Dyke, think he also does seminars at La Sumida Nursery.

Call your local chapter of the Calif Rare Fruit Growers, and JOIN! They have grafting seminars and classes, as well as dedicated volunteer members who help out with questions like these. An enthuisiast's group, not a Professional Organization. The fellow who has the bananas in Goleta is a member.

I think I can help you with your avocado tree.
I don't charge.
If interested call 687 5734 ask for Art.

If Art is on the up and up, quick grab this opportunity. I took the grafting class at La Sumida. Grafting can be complex and really a chore. Best to find someone who has done it and got good results.

Van Dyke won't help you, unless you're willing to pay a pretty steep fee. Don't waste time going to classes/seminars, unless you intend to buy grafting knives and other equipment and intend to do a lot of grafting of other trees.

I watched a series of videos on You Tube, which were most instructive. Haven't tried it yet.

...and why shouldn't Mr Van Dyke charge for his professional services?

I've done apple grafts, and some time ago citrus. Apples are done in the winter. Citrus any time. Avos are probably a lot like citrus.

You can create a magical tree with all sorts of fruits off the same trunk, ripening at different times. Well worth getting it done right.
