If you are looking for treatment for Lymphedema, then the only place to go is Sansum Clinic to see Holly Clement. She is terrific!

Holly Clement never kept even one appointment, so my spouse ended up in the hospital because of her irresponsible attitude. I'm sorry that Sansum keeps her in their system.

There is no such thing as "lymphatic massage". Take a few legitimate courses in human physiology instead and stop paying for junk science.

Treat you body with respect, please. It is an exquisite self-regulating machine.

Don't tamper with one part of it with hocus-pocus charlatans selling the medical fad du jour. (And this includes too many licensed MDs as well)

I inquired awhile back for someone who works with lymphedema. When I balked at seeing Holly, a person who works closely in the area of lymphedema agreed it was true some people do not care for Holly's "bedside manner" and she recommended another person. But sorry I do not recall who that other person was. You may want to ask at the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara for their list of names. It is an important skill for those concerned about lymphedema; it is not junk science.

There are many lymph nodes throughout the body. It is helpful to release and massage these area in the correct way.

After my lymphectomy I returned to my Iyengar yoga classes. My teacher is Richard McLaughln at the Iyengar Yoga Studio. He has worked patiently with me to drain the fluids that build up - and I do this with the yoga poses I have done for years plus some new ones amended for me. It is great because it means I have learnt the "tools" to deal with bad days myself, even if I can't get to the Studio that day. It really has helped me! I am not into junk science, hocus-pocus, or wishy-washy long-shots! If you are dealing with this please don't suffer any longer. I have been there and there's no need for it.

I read this post with great interest, hoping there would be several MLD therapists listed in the area other than Holly Clement at Sansum. I have had MLD therapy several times down in the LA area since 1996 and would love to find someone local.

I think it is very unfortunate that Sansum only has one therapist to perform this much needed therapy. This is a very personal therapy and if you do not gel with the therapist, it can be quite uncomfortable (emotionally). Sansum needs to get on the ball and hire a second therapist!

@889, I think that you may be confusing "lymphatic massage" with Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) Therapy. It is also known as CDPT, Complete Decongestive PhysioTherapy. It is a 4 part therapy that includes specific massage, compression, skin care and maintenance training. Most insurance carriers will cover CDPT/MLD when it is offered within a clinical setting where a licensed physical therapist can "oversee" the patient care and progress.

It is important to find a therapist that is licensed/certified as an MLD therapist, otherwise one runs the risk of having someone do the "lymphatic massage" techniques that can actually damage the delicate lymphatic vessels and valves.

@the OP, please be sure to visit the National Lymphedema Network's website at www.lymphnet.org for further information about lymphedema. You will find a listing of therapists and centers, by state, of licensed and certified therapists.

This is a therapy that has been in existence in Europe and Australia for over 60 years. I can personally attest to its success and validity. When I began my first session, my left calf was 8 inches bigger around than my right. In only 3 weeks of treatment with compression wrapping, my leg was reduced to within 1 1/2 inches in size of the other!. I have maintained that benefit for 16 years. I have Stage 3 lymphedema and the docs thought the therapy was a longshot for me! Though there is no cure for this progressive condition, it can be treated and maintained successfully.

Good luck to you. I hope you get the treatment you need and can learn to maintain a healthy body.

Thank you for the informative post, BullsEye!
Best wishes to you.

(I believe there is a therapist at Sansum Goleta PT on Patterson across from hospital. Don't know her name, but I do know that Mike Lawson, who is also a supervisor, is an amazing therapist and manager and wonderful human who will work with you. They were wonderful with my father.
If one doesn't feel good with a therapist of any kind, one must speak up.)
